    I have had both and TBH I haven't had that much trouble with my old ATI card, though enough trouble that it forced me to learn rewrite xorg.conf quite alot

    I know this thread is old, but ....
    With the OpenCL format and Nvidia seem to make a lot of effort with CUDA, this brings me to consider to buy a new Nvidia card for use in Blender, and other grahpical tools. Blender is still in a beta/eperimental stage of OpenCL implementation.
