ATI card better than Nvidia for linux??

    What you think about this??

I have always problems with this ugly plymouth and think to buy an ATI card and throw my Nvidia card to trash!!!

You ATI users do you have problem with your graphic card??

Re: ATI card better than Nvidia for linux??

I used to have plymouth problems on an old lappy with ati, but the only reason that ati might be better in some regards is that the free/open ati drivers support more hardware with more features than the free nvidia drivers at this point.

Getting into the non-free drivers on either seems to be a wash on problem areas, though recently I seem to see more nvidia postings. But that is not necessarily a real indicator as nvidia probably has a bigger market share, correct?

i have ati. but let me tell you.. in kubuntu 10.10 i had that ugly-plymouth problem when i installed the proprietary driver.
In 11.04 i let kubuntu install the open source driver for ati and there is no problem of plymouth. and all the desktop effects are properly working.

        Hi all...

With Linux, I have always leaned pretty far towards Nvidia because of their drivers and the ease in which they usually can be installed on the system. However, each system and experience can be different, as we have seen many times in these forums.

bottom line is reguarless of if you have an ATI or NVIDIA card the properitary driver will give you ugly plymouth. if you use the open source driver then you should have a nice looking plymouth boot. if thats your only consern then you should be fine w/ either brand providing you use the open source driver for the card.

Re: ATI card better than Nvidia for linux??

I had such a painful experience with an ATI card in the computer that I first tried Ubuntu on (~2006) that I bought an Nvidia card and have always tried to stick with Nvidia or Intel graphics. However it seems that many recent ATI cards work great with the radeon open source driver.

Regarding plymouth miseries, as far as I know this is still a good fix for it: http://idyllictux.wordpress.com/2010...ricted-driver/

I don't get Plymouth. What's it good for? Am I the only one who finds comfort in watching boot text serenely scroll by as my computer starts?

As far as I understand one card is bad other is worse or visa versa
I also had a bad experience with ATI then switched to Nvidia.
                  Now problems with Nvidia again.

Still no solution for Kubuntu 10.10 plymouth and grub screen.

How to remove or bypass plymouth??

when the grub menu comes up press "e" to eddit the boot line and remove the "quiet splash" from the line
then press ctrl>x to boot the modified line .....if this works for you then look up how to permanently modify the line as this will work for the one boot only.

Plymouth is so hardwired into recent *bunutus that it's practically impossible to remove. So I just get around it by modifying /etc/default/grub. The steps:

                      1. Comment out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT lines
                      2. Remove quiet splash from the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line
                      3. Uncomment the GRUB_TERMINAL=console line
                      4. Comment out the GRUB_GFXMODE line
                      5. Below this add the line GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text

Don't forget to sudo update-grub after you make these changes.

Edit (2011-09-23): step 5 is unnecessary here.

nice one @steveriley I was going to post he should remove the vt.handoff=7 as well if he wanted to see the boot text instead of blank screen ..........but you have that covered nicely

and in permanent fashion as well

Thanks. My Natty install doesn't have vt.handoff=7 anywhere, I didn't even know what that was until I searched for it after you posted.

My curiosity about purging Plymouth is back. There are some interesting suggestions in mountall bug #556372 on Launchpad, including creating a dummy Plymouth and a PPA with versions of mountall and cryptsetup that remove the Plymouth dependency. I'm going to experiment with these and report back -- probably in a new thread.

IMO, plymouth is really just eye candy as Steve so eloquently but subtly (he's often eloquent, but rarely subtle ) pointed out. I would not throw money into a new graphics card with the hope that it will work better with a splash screen.

I enjoy a beautiful plymouth screen with my nvidia cards and my intel ones too. I stopped buying ATI a decade ago because their drivers and software suuuukkkk - but that's just my opinion and I haven't bothered to try them again as I have no reason too.

I needed only to put vmalloc=512MB vga=795 in my boot options for grub to get it perfectly normal, however YMMV.

Perhaps a little research into your log files, the internet, and your model of card and driver will reveal a tip that will get it working properly?

                              Thank you for noticing

See my thread, Plymouth is for Pilgrims, not PCs, in the Experimentation/Customization/Optimization section for how I expunged this bit of unnecessary eye candy.
