    List: kde-announce
Subject: [kde-announce] Official deprecation of phonon-backend-xine
    From: Trever Fischer
    Date: 2011-06-06 14:17:32

Its been mentioned once or twice in public channels, but nobody has actually
    made a straightforward announcement.

The Xine backend for Phonon is totally unmaintained and therefore deprecated.
The only backends people should be using are VLC and GStreamer.

Unless of course, some willing and brave developer would like to step up and
    take on the challenge

An update on Phonon-Xine with Trever Fischer, maintainer of Phonon-GStreamer:

We here at the Commit-Digest asked Trever Fischer, maintainer of Phonon-GStreamer and libphonon, about why the Xine backend has become officially unmaintained. To begin, Trever first outlined the most recent commit history, which is lacking:...

      GStreamer vs. VLC

OK, I've just removed Xine from my system as recommended. At the moment I have GStreamer installed. But what are the pros and cons of Gstreamer vs. VLC?

Thanks, I had fiddled with Xine a while back and it basically didn't work, now I know why. Curiously, I posted a thread elsewhere about phonon backend for Amarok needing two items to work for mp3 streams. I wonder if there will be OTHER stuff!? lol, but anyway, thanks for this thread.

I prefer VCL because it has the most power in the smallest package. I can watch up to 12 videos on a single screen at the same time (which I was doing while watching the BP robots in the Gulf, and watching the webcam outputs along the US-Mexican border). VCL also allows me to change an audio or video file from one format into another. And, it offers streaming....

I would probably be watching Crusader Rabbit, Rocky and Bullwinkle, SkyKing, the Three Stooges and Laurel and Hardey, Hopalong Cassidy and the Galloping Gourmet. But, then I'm not GG.

Rocky and Bullwinkle was a cartoon for adults! I loved it!

Which is not exatly helpful, as most of these links show no activity at all and were only copied over to the git repository for historic reasons.
Currently only the phonon-backend-gstreamer and the phonon-backend-vlc are maintained, besides Phonon of course
