    best photo software for newbie

hi friends.. i am new to kubuntu..
i wonder what will be good software to play along with photos.
    here is my requirement.

    1. easy resizing of photo/photos..i.e. batch resizing (i have nikon D60.. so its photos are quite heavy.)
    2. "fill light" functionality as in picasa..
    3. minor tuning viz. sepia, tilt correction etc
    4. like picasa it should find photos automatically.

i have picasa installed on kubuntu.. but apart from that?
is there any good photo software already bundled with karmic?

I agree with toad. Digikam is not even close to being as powerful as the GIMP, but it will crop and resize photos. It can also do light weight color balancing. It is easy to use, and it's on the installation CD.

Agreed. digikam for quick easy stuff. More advanced editing, GIMP. GIMP does have a bit of a learning curve. But if you've ever used Photoshop (M$), it's not that bad to move over to. I've been using GIMP for years.

ok.. the GIMP screen shots look familiar..
                will give it a shot..

@toad: do i have to install digicam.. or it is already present in kubuntu
                i typed in command window(Alt + f2): digicam
"it opened digital camera - KDE Control Module"..

but what next.. it does not have a photo import facility..
i guess i am looking at completely different application..

tell me the sudo code for that then..

                  It's digikam with a "k"

As far as I know, it isn't included in a default install but it is in the repos.

Nice, haven't seen Digikam before, I like it! (it crashed but I'm on Lucid testing stuff now so no biggie)

In a way I agree, but I've been using/used to photoshop* (not professionally) and I must say there are some differences in layout and approach which can get quite frustrating at first, however now once I've been learning GIMP more and more I really do like it better for being more intuitive.

*Edit; it was CS2 as I remember so I guess there's a slight difference now.

How did you get to know the gimp? I wouldn't mind creating a plymouth theme for myself and it requires some forty to sixty pngs (basically like a little film). That sounds like a LOT of work to me, prohibitively so. But if there is a way...

                            thanks guys..
i tried the application suggested on this thread.
gimp is close to photo shop.. it loads fast (even faster thank digikam) and has great functionality... though bit difficult if not to much familiar with photoshop kinda softwares.
digikam.. is awesome.. i liked it alot.. very simple to use.. though lacks the "look" of picasa and takes bit more time to load.. still.. nice app..i think i am going to stick with digikam.
if only.. it had the window which shows all the photos in pictures folder, like picasa.. it would have been super duper good
