Re: Screenshot of Login Screen? - XDMCP

Did the same on the laptop, so at least I'm consistent.

xbase-clients = current version installed is 1:7.2-5ubuntu13 and was stated for Gutsy.
xauth = current version installed is 1:1.0.2-0ubuntu1

    Code:
I'm using Synaptic (+apt in the konsole). I don't think that the problem is in dependencies. Problem seem to be in the graphical login.
I agree, but I don't know where to look. I've tried looking for help relating to such for xephyr and xnest, but haven't found anything yet. Still looking - 8)

      When i:
      Code:
      :~$ Xephyr -query localhost :1
      kdm_greet starts.

      man kdm_greet:
      KDM_GREET(1) KDE greeter module KDM_GREET(1)

      NAME
kdm_greet - KDE greeter module for kdm

      SYNOPSIS
      kdm_greet

      DESCRIPTION
kdm_greet is a KDE greeter module for kdm. It shows the login dialog.
Can you see it in the KSysGuard ?

        Re: Screenshot of Login Screen?

Maybe I'm interpreting things wrong. This is what I get.

        Code:
Extended Input Devices not yet supported. Impelement it at line 625 in ../../../../hw/kdrive/src/kinput.c
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic, removing from list!

          Re: Screenshot of Login Screen?

          I get same errors.

Hmm - it seems that kdm_greet is sometimes slow:

          http://lists.debian.org/debian-kde/2.../msg00222.html
          > I have just upgraded some packages from kde.
          > By starting kdm, a process called "kdm_greet" starts to work hard on

          http://www.kde-forum.org/artikel/853...t-problem.html
when starting kdm, it takes about 4 minutes to the login form of kdm apear, using command "top" i can see that kdm_greet uses a lot of cpu ( 95% to 99%).

OK. Then maybe I'm not giving it enough time. I'll let it sit for 5 minutes and see. I'l let you know.

              Re: Screenshot of Login Screen?

Well, I let sit a while and this appeared in konsole.

              Code:
XDM: too many retransmissions, declaring session dead
FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

Re: [SOLVED] Screenshot of Login Screen? - XDMCP

Just to let you know about the Desktop, I still don't get anything, but I do get this error message when it is left open for an extended period. I've tried looking for a reason, but couldn't find it. One entry I found referenced having two NICs causing the problem, but the Desktop has only 1 NIC, wired. Now the laptop has two, wired and wireless and it worked, so to me that goes against 2 NICs causing the problem. Anyway, I have the laptop working and I can use it, but if you have any ideas on the desktop, I'll listen.

                  Code:
                  Fatal server error:
XDMCP fatal error: Session failed Session 442512004 failed for display localhost:1: cannot open display

Re: [SOLVED] Screenshot of Login Screen? - XDMCP

OK, I think I've confirmed the NIC issue. The laptop actually quit working as far as zephyr is concerned. Therefore I closed knetworkmanager and disabled the NICs form System Settings and there it was. Working like it did. Next test, disable the Desktop NIC. I'll report back on that. Interesting.

Re: [SOLVED] Screenshot of Login Screen? - XDMCP

Definitely confirmed!!!! That is the issue. Now why? I don't know. For me all I wanted to do was get a screen shot of my custom logins. So quiting knetworkmanager, killing the NetworkManagerD and NetworkManager processes and then disabling the NIC from System Settings allowed my desktop to use zephyr and xnest. For the laptop, all I did was quit knetworkmanager and disabled the NIC. Do not know if the laptop had those processes running, didn't check into that until I looked at the desktop. This should help those having similar problems and for me this will be considered SOLVED.

So when do we get to see your custom login screen shots?

I'll probably of center the actual login section. This was to get my "feet" wet.

Visually, I'd agree. Placement in the lower right section, with the bottom edge of the login box half again the distance to the bottom of the image, and the right edge of the login box a similar distance from the images right edge would probably be a good placement, IMO.
