How useful would a kubuntu based wiki be

I am just putting this idea out there to see what people think more then anything else.

What would people think about having a kubuntu focused wiki, I know we already have allot of wikis about, some very decent ones as well including the kde ones and the ubuntu ones where you can get most of the information you need, but often lack the kubuntu twist on things, ie ubuntu wiki is focused around gnome and the kde wiki doesn't touch anything under the ui.

We currently have the How-to and Knowledge base sub forums, but I have never found forums to be a good way to store or access this type of information.

So what would people think adding another wiki for kubuntu? Do you think people would used it? Would you use it? Do we need one? What else do you think?

I have set up a few MediaWiki sites in the past and would be willing to help get things up running, but would like to know what other people think before I really invest any time into this.

Maybe we should encourage more folks to contribute to the existing one: https://wiki.kubuntu.org/

Wow, we already have one, maby we should publicize it more , I don't ever recall anything ever linking to that site during my use of kubuntu :S

Not even a mention on the community page :S unless I am being blind :s

Nope, you aren't blind. We understand that documentation and related materials could be better. I volunteered at UDS to work on this.

You should hit me up if there are things to clean up or create; I need to get back into the wiki thing again.

Not to downplay them, but working on a wiki page, staring at the text too long always seemed to help me fall asleep and I often have trouble with slumber these days/nights

Yes a better Kubuntu wiki would be a nice addition. Maybe a better link from the front page.

I dont know what would go in it though. KDE stuff is covered by the KDE wiki and the base OS stuff is covered by the Ubuntu so....

This. I see it the same way.

I see kubuntu and ubuntu diverging more and more with each release. Anything written about software in Ubuntu tends to be irrelevant in Kubuntu (not that you can't install any Launchpad app in Kubuntu, of course). I still see a lot of value in getting the Kubuntu wiki up to snuff. In other words, if that logic was 100% accurate, we would all be chatting over at the Official Ubuntu Forums, and not here. Yes, but all the software in KDE is covered in the KDE wiki pages. I can think of ver little that is not covered by either Ubuntu wiki or KDE wiki.

I think there might be scope to have something like OMGubuntu for Kubuntu or KDE distros. There are some Kubuntu and KDE news blogs out there but they all appear to be aimed towards developers rather than end users. There are new plasmoids and updates of great but little known kde apps all the time that we don't get to hear much about. I have an RSS feed from http://kde-apps.org/ but I'm sure there's a lot more going in in KDE and Qt that we would be interested in.

                      .

I'd have to agree here with whatthefunk here. Kubuntu (and Xubuntu, Lubuntu, etc.) is basically Ubuntu (base) with KDE (XFCE, LXDE, other DE/WM) used instead of GNOME w/ Unity. There may be different PM's used (Muon instead of Synaptic, though nothing stops you from using the latter) but it 's all still APT/dpkgin the core of *buntu. Any Kubuntu wiki, then, would just be the KDE and Ubuntu wikis copied almost verbatim (though not all of Ubuntu wiki concerning Unity).

I think the point is that a new user would not know to go to both the Ubuntu wiki and the KDE wiki (or forums). They would expect to go to the Kubtuntu Forums and the Kubutnu Wiki. We need to think like new users, even if having more exposure to our own Wiki might not really benefit us that much. Then again, if it's current and well maintained, it still likely would.

I agree with this, but the question is that is it worth the extra maintenance.

As for the official kubuntu wiki... it seems very developer focused... I couldn't find any user content at all from a quick browse which will turn new users off it.

On my blog I put together a resource page http://www.bluemintlinux.com/p/parti...d-discuss.html whereby I try to list all of the resources available to a new user. There's a lot of resources out there. Maybe the Kubuntu Wiki should simply have a section for users similar to this instead of trying to aggregate all this information for users into itself.
