    Ad links...

    Hi all...

This post is primarily to address those who own or help manage this forum.

I noticed a couple days ago (when I was viewing the forum not logged in,) a post of mine that had words that were "clickable" (blue in color) that I did not create links for. Instead, they were for some ad site that I can't remember the name of and ebay.

I'm not sure how anyone else feels about this, but I object to it! In the last forum, it was simply ad pictures (sometimes flash) between the posts. That was acceptable but having a server take words that I have written and making sales links out them is not acceptable to me. The links I create are for the purpose of helping the OP's or others on a given thread. In part, I want to avoid confusion for those who would see a post. I can envision someone clicking on a link that had had something written like "PCI Card" (who knows, the server might take those two words and make a link out of them to prove my point,) thinking they were going to receive important information and see only an advertisement instead. That just wastes people's time. The other is that I find it intrusive or invasive in a way.

I understand KFN has to employ an ad scheme to help pay the bills but please go back to the way it was before, in the last forum ran by Simple Machines. And in case I missed it, re-insert the paypal donate button as well.

Thank you for your time and consideration...

    Regards...

Guests without an account and members who don't log in and browse as "guests" will see ads. (Or at least they used to on the old KFN site, so I suspect that is the case on this site.).

          Hi GreyGeek...

Right, but like I said, the old KFN never made links out of what we wrote, to my knowledge anyway. Can this be rectified?

I am logged in and see with blue links the following words:

            see here
            here
            supports

I would imagine that the "here" and the "see here" are things to which you linked but that "supports" is the item of offence?

              Hi Woodsmoke....

Please view the page not logged in. In the same post, you will see a blue link in "graphics card." If you hover your mouse over it, you should see a "bubble" pop up into view (next to it) that says "Shopping link added by SkimWords." Click on the link and you will see that a new tab opens along with a page from ebay.

I would not be concerned about this. As pointed out, 'only non-members, or members who visit KFN and don't log in' see the adds/links. That is by design. KFN members who log in to KFN do not see the adds.

I agree, even though I've never actually seen what you're referring to. (I have AdBlock installed and active by default in SeaMonkey, so I never see any ads.) I do want to second your motion to bring back the PayPal donate button.

At this point, the amount of funds that were donated to our host, Open Source, was sufficient (IIRC) to host the new KFN for at least a year. While I have no objection to an ongoing 'held support KFN' campaign, it is up to Open Source -- it is after all, his forum.

I can see Aardvark's point, but, for me personally, I view it kind of like the book Hidden Persuaders by Vance Packard that was published back in the sixties about, not "subliminal" advertising but "covert" advertising that one does not realise is advertising. And, because of that book I have been "aware" of advertising since then.

If the links were there when I was logged in then I would probably be complaining just like Aardvark, but, since it is only seen by "visitors" etc. then I can live with that, it is rather like going to the New Yawk times and reading an article and there is something that "seems" like a link to an article which expands on the one being read and it is really an advert.

I have noticed this kind of thing appearing in Linux "magazines" also.

So...I'm of two minds on it, but since it is intended that it be for visitors I can see the point, and as was said above, Open Source will make the final decision and I am sure that a) there are forces at play of which we know little and b) our opinions will be taken into account as best as can be done.

just thoughts and not to be taken seriously.

                        Hi all...

Thank you for your comments, for all who have posted. Again, I just simply object to and disagree with the concept of creating advertising links without the permission of the poster. There are other ways of advertising without using this particular method. The old KFN simply had ads between the posts which was tolerable.

(Forget the part that was here, it was a bit divisive and retaliatory, even though it was not my intention, more a reaction. I apologize for any offense, I should have calmed down and thought about it more.)
                        Regards...

I agree with woodsmoke: "...If the links were there when I was logged in then I would probably be complaining just like Aardvark, but, since it is only seen by "visitors" etc. then I can live with that ..."

I would hope that this advertising is paid advertising that pays well enough to make it make good sense. As I've said before on this subject, this is capitalism, and we must be realistic (and even thankful in many cases) for mechanism like paid advertising. Even PBS has evolved to "allow" it from its sponsors, albeit in the form of toned-down, non-affronting, informational intro's.

                            Thanks for the info, SH.

It's really good to know that we, collectively, have opened our wallets to the point that KFN isn't hurting for funds. Honestly, it makes me proud[er than I already was] to be part of this amazing community. It shows the caliber of people we have here...and I like it.

The system is called skimlinks and is built in to vb, not sure if it is on by default or not. I am guessing it is, pending confirmation. We added Google ads, I know, but that it's in a banner. I don't think we need 2 ad systems.
