    Re: Reporting Abuse

My bad. Unless you turn off "Notify by e-mail..." in Personal Message Options, you will receive a the message as well. It's weird though, since it's supposed to only notify you, not actually tell you what the contents are.

I got a private message from a "Don Johnson" probably a spam bot, which sent a message containing a few links and an attached picture of a naked man with a huge cock... not nice.
here's a copy of the message with the subject header at the top. I sabataged the links so they don't lead where they intend to direct the user. I added a "1" , it's for our protection. The attached image was also sabotaged so no-one will see it here. I'm just posting it here for proof that I'm not making this up, in case this Don Johnson is normally a reputable user here.

I too take offence this type of email from this fine distro. Please advise the prober people
It would be nice to be easily report abuse with private messages or forum posts that are spam.

MPORTANT: Remember, this is just a notification. Please do not reply to this email.

We moderators are just as troubled by this as you are. But please rememeber: we are forum moderator, and not site admins, and as such do not have the privileges to remedy this. I have contacted OS by various methods, but have not yet received a reply.

I don't _think_ anyone's mentioned this yet: you can go to your profile, Personal Message Options, and add Don Johnson to your Ignorelist.

I've no idea what this will do (only been using this forum for a few weeks, and not really a forum person before that), but it sounds good ... Spread the word?

I am friend of Open Source and I heard what happened here.

                  The spammer has been banned
                  Info:
                  IP: 72.234.50.113
                  Hostname:
                  udp038291uds.hawaiiantel.net

I have deleted all pm's that were sent by this person.
I am going to try and develop a mod to limit only to 10 personal messages can be sent per day per account.

                    Dear forum admins,

I have also received spam pms from this bot.

I don't believe banning specific IP addresses will be effective in the long term. As you know, spammers use farms of compromised machines, usually windows, and change IP frequently. I think you will need to prevent automated registration of accounts.

I looked at the forum registration page, and it appears very easy to script automated signups. There is no "image" text that has to be entered, or email response required to activate the account. Also, the default is to make the user's email visible on the forum (?), this probably should default to hidden to make harvesting more difficult. In short there doesn't appear to be much to prevent automated sign-ups.

Looks like a bot to me.................

Rather ironic that the delivery of the message coincides with the Premier of the new Miami Vice film here in the UK..............

                        Re: Reporting Abuse

In other linux forums that I use it is necessary to post a certian number of times before sending private messages. At least one of the forums has a spam(read porn) filter in place. Those messages are blocked and the sended is banned from the forum.
On several forums I use I have seen people banned for abusive posts which were not to the point in question. Those forums do provide a seperate posting thread for off topic discussions again abuse is punished. This is the first forum where I see the moderators have no power to act. Many forums allow the moderators to pull, block or otherwise get rid if ANY abuse. Several photography forums will even pull the complete thread if necessary. At one point a moderator on photo.net just plain cancelled the account of several persons.

The moderators here need more power to slapdown the vermin when they appear.

That said I blocked ALL PRIVATE messages until the moderators are given the power to moderate. Othewise why do we need them (moderators)?

                          Added CAPTCHA to user registeration.
                          Disabled sending PM's.

I will talk to Open Source when he comes back.

Thank you SMF Guy. I also think we should implement a minimum number of posts before one could send PMs.

Would you happen to know what are the functions of a forum moderator and if it's possible to give them a bit more power? It seems that for now, they're only capable of locking and moving threads. I think Open Source needs a bit more help, and I believe the moderators will be willing to to do that (I'm just presuming... ).

I could give them more power but I will wait till I hear from Open Source. And with post based groups I could toggle the ability to send pms we will see how that goes.

I have people at SMF looking at this pm spam problem.

                                Re: Reporting Abuse

That's great! Thanks for the updates. So am I correct in presuming that this is a general SMF software security problem?

I hope that it will be addressed soon, as people are beginning to get the impression that SMF software = KubuntuForums.Net = Kubuntu distro, and that a problem of one of these reflects the instability/insecurity of Kubuntu itself.

So the moderators are really only able to lock and move threads right now?

Thanks again for your time. Any estimate when Open Source will be back from his family trip/event?
