    Oneiric forum

I'd like to suggest opening a forum for the Oneiric Ocelot (11.10).

There are already a few threads touching oneiric, and the alphas have started to come out (along with daily isos)

I've been using 11.10 since those first daily ISOs. Very stable, not had one crash yet, posting with it now. KDE is now at version 4.6.3 through the normal repositories, rather than using a PPA as with 11.04 and earlier releases.

May be stability will change once KDE 4.7 arrives but a dedicated forum should be opened up ready for its arrival.

OK, I'm tempted .... googling for the 11.10 daily build repo now.

            Yep, it's coming down now.

I finally got VMware compiling its kernel modules correctly on a 2.6.39 kernel (long story there) and so we'll see if I can set up an Oneiric VM without messing up the floor and walls.

Wow, that was painless. 64-bit Oneiric is now downloading its first 33 updates.

Which reminded me ... I installed Oneiric as a guest OS on VBox on the first day the LiveCD iso was posted.
I just ran apt-get to upgrade it and had 98 packages waiting. It's doing it now.

When I tested Oneiric after I first installed it I was surprised at how flawlessly it ran. It will be interesting to see how this update fairs.

                EDIT:
mmm... "module usblp does not exist in /proc/modules", but cups loaded and seems to be running ok.

                  Re: Oneiric forum

Except for audio, mine seems to have come in pretty complete. I just installed my usual a$$load of software package, including chromium-browser and flash, and set up a SSH tunnel to the host system so I can pass files back and forth. I'm not sure what's up with the audio -- VMware provides a generic ES1370 (a type of AC-97) sound system, and I see the only backend that comes with 11.10 is gstreamer, so I guess I will need to do some fiddling to make that work. Also I'll need to set up a "cheater" repo to get java -- no problem.

While Oneiric was setting in my VBox doing nothing while I perused this forum, a saw a notification pop up informing me that KPackageKit had 87 packages ready to install. I gave it the go-ahead.

                    It failed with
                    "plasma_dataengine_activities.so" failed because ...
it conflicted with the previous version, etc.,,, what would be called an "dependency hell". I am going through the usual fixit methods.

I upgraded to oneiric when the repos opened shortly after natty release, and it has been quite smooth (my bluetooth doesn't work, but that's a problem with the .39 kernel).

Then again, there hasn't been many drastic changes yet, at least not on the kubuntu side of things...I'm expecting a somewhat rougher ride when kde sc 4.7 alphas and the new kdepim packages start flowing in (by which time a separate forum would surely be a nice thing to have).

                        Re: Oneiric forum

                        Bluetooth runs in VB.

Well, the first batch of 68 updates went fine.

But, apparently, that wasn't all of them. A few minutes later another 87 popped up in KPackageKit.
This time the updates failed with a classic problem but
                        sudo apt-get -f install
                        sudo dpkg --configure -a
                        wouldn't help.

That 11.10 package manager is muon, GG. A big step forward for Kubuntu, IMHO. Here's a screenie -- Kubuntu 11.10, 64-bit, with chromium-browser running a flash video (ABBA "I do I do I do"):

The audio issue was just me forgetting to tell VMware to use the soundcard. :P
