    Some Forum Suggestions, Part 2

This was part 1, btw: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=4079.0

First of all, let me just thank and congratulate again Open Source for his commitment to maintaining this forums. Even when he's out of town and busy with his own life, he still finds time to work on this site. For a one man team Administrator, he does his job very well.

(Let me sneak in some thanks to our moderators who do their best to keep the forums healthy and alive. OMG! I just noticed that Jonathan Riddell is a moderator!! THE jriddell! )

Anyway, on to the meat of the thread, my suggestions:

    1. Probably a modified color scheme, to reflect Dapper's new look, as was suggested by Hestia (http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=5429.0).
    2. Repeating the call for a revamp of the forum organization.
    3. Still hoping that there's a way to have the side panels configured per user settings, meaning that if user A wants it on, it stays on wherever he is, but if user B wants it off, it stays off. This is specially useful in promoting the "unused" features of the site. (more on that later on)
    4. I think there should be a KFN FAQ, even a very short one. It could contain the history/origin of the site (to clarify that this is not a Canonical-run forum), rules and regulations, descriptions of the forum sections, etc. I'm not sure everybody wanders off into the Administrative Announcements to find these information. A very visible link to a FAQ would perhaps be better.
    5. Kubuntu Announcements, while open to the public, should not be a place to start questions. It's ok to post replies or questions in replies, but not start a thread asking for support (happened once). I think it should be included in the description of forum sections.
    6. I like the portal. As much as possible, I use it in my bookmarks. It also has some nice features that are possibly not that used or even unknown. I have some suggestions to possibly help in "advertising" it or encouraging users to use it (hmm... that was quite redundant ):
    - the "Welcome to KubuntuForums.Net" should always be on top, but it should also be short. Also, it might be more appropriate to have the Kubuntu logo instead of KDE (or maybe both?).
    - Instead of the Kubuntu Announcements section in the portal, maybe you could put the "Recent Threads" instead. If it's possible, just list the thread titles, and no more contents. To see an example of what I mean, check this out from the KDE-Forum portal (http://www.kde-forum.org/portal.html). This could be a good way for people to keep track of new topics or new replies, especially if they don't have RSS readers.
    - You could also still retain the Kubuntu Announcements part, but since that section is open to regular users, it's open to spam, wrong threads, etc. Maybe the mods could have the ability to put some Kubuntu Annoucnements into the Latest News so that it dislays in the portal front page? (Or probably not)
    - RSS feed: /. is a very controversial source of information (or gossip if you prefer), so I don't think having that in the front page isn't really pretty. Some alternative sources of feeds could be: KDE dot news, PlanetKDE, Planet Ubuntu, Linux.com. I have tons of feeds, if you want. But of course, having 5 different feeds isn't good either. I wonder if there's going to be a Planet Kubuntu (in English. There's a German site already).
    - encourage people to use/post in the site's features. Let's have a "Desktop Screenshots for the Month of xxxxx" so that people could get to use the Image Gallery. Maybe we could encourage users to post news, blogs, quotes, etc. Or even use the Shout Box. This is assuming, of course, that the site can handle the amount of data that could come in.
    - the shout box, IMHO is a nice feature. Did it really cause such a ruckus that it had to be removed from the forums page? I think it's a nice place to put important announcements. Of course, there should be rules to prevent chaos from reigning.

Whew! That's quite a load. Of course I don't expect all of it to be implemented immediately. Heck, I don't even expect it to be implemented at all. Just suggestions anyway. And given the time that Open Source has, I won't feel bad if he decides not to do it. The forums is functional as it is. These are just suggestions on how I think (emphasis on "I think") it could be better.

    OK, I'm stopping here.

Ok, I added in one more RSS feed on the index page and I add a Most Recent Topics section at the top of the index page (portal page). Check it out and give me your feedback please. I will be looking into the bookmark mod which was a suggestion in another post when I get back from Florida. Please note that the latest topic section is just that, latest TOPIC not post. I could change that to be the latest posts if that would be better, just let me know.

Wow that's cool! Thanks for taking my suggestions into consideration.

Everythings seem fine, except for one last thing. On the center/main section of the portal, I think the order of the sections should be rearranged. Something like this:

        From top to bottom
        1. Latest News (because it has the welcome message)
        2. Boardnews (if ever you decide to still keep it there)
        3. Latest Topic Posts
        4. RSS feeds (at the very bottom)

Regarding latest topic vs. latest post, I'm quite undecided yet. The problem with having latest topics only is that we won't know which ones have been replied to. On the other hand, latest posts will most likely build up too quickly, causing other topics/posts to pass by without being noticed. As it stands, I think the latest topics would be the better option.

Again, thank you for your effort!

P.S. Hope you're doing okay. You've been gone for quite some time. I guess you haven't been able to fully use Kubuntu Dapper yet.

No I haven't been able to use it much yet. Just installed it last night and it is incredible, considering the wireless tool works great now. I am having a lot of fun with it. I just noticed something that may be wrong and that is the number of guests currently online. It has never been that high, and the list of current users is not working properly, so I am going to have to figure that one out.

Well, there have been a lot of activity/posts here since Dapper was released (things mellowed down a bit these past days). But 3750 users online? That is strange indeed.

Btw, I might make a poll later on, asking if peole want the side bars on by default. I've tried viewing the forums in a 800x600 resolution and I personally didn't have any problems with having the side bars on. Of course, it does eat up a bit of space, but I think it's worth it, specially having access to many features. The random images are quite fun to see (in fact, I deliberately refresh the browser just to see w/c image would come up) specially if more people will post their screenshots.

Ok, I need someone to make a new logo for the forums if we are to use the current colors of the kubuntu site. I would suggest making it the same as the kubuntu site header but add the word forums to it. Then I can begin changing the colors of the forums. I have asked if ericesque would do it, but if anyone would be willing please let me know.

Jucato, could you explain in detail how you would see the ideal arrangement of forums?

If anyone would like to help me put together an FAQ page, let me know.

Thanks for the comments above Jucato.

Is this something like you're looking for?

It's just a quick edit, I'd be happy to edit it further to fit your preferences (for example the color/position of the forums text)

Edit: Hmm...the preview is autoscaled, open the image to see it in the right proportions

It looks great. I think pretty much using the kubuntu.org header and then just adding the word 'forums' to it in white would look great. Could you try that? Ericesque is working on one as well. I like the look you gave it. Also, maybe you could move the 'forums' word over to the right further.

Re: Some Forum Suggestions, Part 2

Here's a mockup of what I was suggesting for the portal page, to make it look a bit more "professional" and inviting. But a few notes first:

                      1. I changed the header to kubicle's 1st header suggestion, just to test the new color scheme against the older color scheme (hope you don't mind kubicle...)

                      2. I rearranged both the middle and side panels into what I think would be a more logical arrangement. The left side panel would contain all the forum related controls (board controls, personal CP, forum stats, etc). The right panel would contain the additional features like the Shout Box, Random Images, and Calendar. I also removed the Main Menu in the left panel, since the same menu is always visible in the headers.

                      3. As for the middle, I rearranged the parts according to importance in relation to Kubuntu.

Here's the screenshot. It's a bit large, though...

I definitely like the rearrangement of the side panels.

The main page looks very long though (the screenshot really tells you how long it is )...but it's long already

                        (hope you don't mind kubicle...)

Yeah I never realized how long it was until I made that mockup. It could probably use some trimming down. Just my suggestions:

                          - reduce the Latest News annoucnements to 2 entries
                          - reduce the Boardnews Kubuntu Announcements to 2 or 3 entries
                          - retain the 5 latest topics post
                          - RSS: Is it possible to display only the headlines for the Slashdot feeds, just like the ones for the KDE Dot News? If it's even possible, the RSS could be just put at the right side bar, beneath the calendar.

Thank you Open Source for your modifications!

Is that shorter? I think the main page looks pretty good now.
