    Re: "Venting" section

The admins are mostly myself, and Open Source, and Askreiger. I know I work 50+ hours a week with very limited time and access for email and web stuff when I am there. I try to get these spam posts deleted asap, but if we are all at work, unfortunately these posts remain for some time. I took care of 2 different spam posters yesterday, but none of the posts had images. I did not receive a notice from GreyGeek yesterday about this, but I usually get reports from a number of members for each spam post.

We are discussing adding in a better method of deterring the bots that sign up and post, but i am not familiar enough with the software used so I cannot say how easy it would be to do. Open Source, the site's owner knows more about that.

As to adding another forum to the board, I personally don't see the need for another one. We do have the User Testimonials board, which is where I move those sorts of post to. I think it is a good place for it, as Testimonials don't necessarily have to be positive.

      Re: "Venting" section

      Hi ClayDoh,

I clicked the "report to moderator" link and described it as XXX porn, IIRC. There were three photos.

50+ hours a weeek on this forum? Are you single? Retired?

I'm not single but I am retired after about 40 yrs of programming and doing all sorts of computer related stuff. I probably spend between 30-60 hrs per week on this laptop. I would be more than glad to help out with the moderation or take some other kind of the load off you and the rest.

claydoh@ Make sure, that when you visit a post reported to contain porn, that you don't have your popup blocker enabled. I think that was the issue way back when I notified you of a post that contained porn. I saw it when I went to the post, but you said you saw nothing of the sort. It wasn't until I replied again that you realized that your settings prevented you from seeing it.

As to Forum accounts, if Open Source would incorporate the use of 'visual' responses - type what you see above - like many forums do, this would nearly eliminate ALL spam bot account creation, as a bot can't "see" anything.

          Re: "Venting" section

I have only been around here for a short time, but I don't think this forum really needs a "rants" section. The reason I say this is that there already is the Community Cafe. That is a perfectly good place to have a discussion and I see that it is used that way. I am also a member of The Vintage Computer Forum which has a "Completely off topic" area with a "Rants" section. What happens there is sometimes excellent humour but usually just a discussion around some pet peeve. Check this thread on "mini towers" if you want to see a civilized rant: http://www.vintage-computer.com/vcfo...ad.php?t=16801 You will notice that it is actually quite informative as well as a way to share ones feelings about various types of boxes. To my mind, that is how adults do it.

After having read through this whole thread, I am actually quite surprised at the assumptions being made. Please note that I do realize that at least some of them may be correct for this community, and that I likely come from an alternate universe - but they certainly are startling to me. For example, some people seem to think that there will be arguments. Others think there will be inappropriate language. Some even seem to think that there will be posting of incorrect information, astroturfing, and "trolling". WHY!!! These things are not appropriate on a public forum in the first place. Why should they be appropriate now, and why would they not be moderated - as always?

I agree that it is a good idea to tolerate a certain amount of frustration from others. That is just good personal policy - people are human and that's what I like about them. But not all venting is unproductive, at least up to a point. Some rants can certainly be quite funny (I have enjoyed John Cleese on occasion) and I do think that attitude is everything when it comes to expressing oneself and understanding other people's expressions. That said, I still don't think that a new section is needed. The Community Cafe is already a good place for a friendly, and perhaps even humourous, discussion of ones general concerns. /2¢
