Are you using MS Windows to power this forum???

I made a mistake modifying an URL to this forum and the standard MS error page. Just try:
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3099595.0

Does it mean this forum runs on a Windows server?
What does it mean for Ubuntu bug #1 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1)?

    Confused...

Re: Are you using MS Windows to power this forum

On what, and with who, our host (Open Source) chooses to run this forum on is his business only. This question has been asked (and answered) before. OS charges nothing, nada, zip, to anyone who wants to become a member. He pays the entire cost to run this excellent Forum completely out of his own pocket.

He who accepts bread from the hand of a stranger freely offered, should not then comment as to the type of bread being offered.

Okay, it's late, and I've said my peace. No offense meant, so I hope none is taken.

Yes this forum is hosted on a Windows server simply because that is what I initially had available when the forum started ~3 years ago. I have contemplated moving the server to another Linux based server that I now have available at this time, however, it just doesn't seem worthwhile or necessary considering the site has been running stable with only a couple down times since the beginning. At some point, I am sure I will move it, but for now it will remain on this Windows server.

Why don't you place some kind of ads on the forum? With the amount of visitors you get, the ads should help pay for a considerable amount of the forums.

You can even place them at the footer and it'll still probably help.

If OS felt the need, in the beginning or now, he would have done so. That he has not, I am very grateful for. I detest sites that bombard you with advertisements. I (personally) have offered (and suggested) that he accept donations from those of us who feel we are getting a great service, and want to help support it. That offer (from me) was gratefully acknowledged and declined. OS provides us with this site because he wants and can do so.

Speaking for myself only, should it ever come to the point that keeping KFN going becomes financially burdensome to OS, I would gladly help support it financially to the extent I am able (annual membership?). I'm sure many others here would as well.

I do have ads on the site, but only to visitors and not to members. So far it has been sufficient to host the site. At this point, I do have the opportunity and ability to host the server on a Linux box, however, I have not done so in the interest of keeping the site up and I didn't want to risk losing anything during the move. At some point, probably during the next software upgrade, I will move the site to the Linux box.

            Thanks

There's nothing wrong with selling advertising. This is America for goodness' sake. Oops. This is Everywhere for goodness' sake. That's capitalismo -- like it or not, money keeps things working, it's how things get done. Bill Clinton knows it. Even the Pope knows it.

I had never realised that this site was provided by one person. I just happened upon it and joined! Anyway I for one am VERY grateful because since moving to Kubuntu from Mandriva three years ago it has been a constant source of help and encouragement and I've recommended it to others many times. So, Thank You, Open Source, for this wonderful example of "community" which it seems to me is what FOSS is all about.

Incidentally, like Snowhog, I, too, would be willing to pay an annual subscription if it ever became necessary. Thanks again!

Yes I've noticed the Ads when not logged in. Not intrusive either. See nothing wrong with it. I'd do the same thing if I ran my own site. Gota pay the bills some how.

Re: Are you using MS Windows to power this forum

I appreciate everyone's willingness to donate/pay for the Kubuntu site. I may post a donation link in the future, however at this point in time I don't feel like my time in site upkeep and updates justifies donations. We have such great moderators and users that make this site run by itself which is wonderful.

I hope to have more time in the future to implement some of the many requests that users have posted and at that point when my time and anyone else's time becomes a larger factor, I would look into the donations method.

At this time, things are running smoothly and I want to thank everyone for making this site possible.
