    we need a wiki

    Ahem,

here is why I think we would all benefit from a wiki:

    1. we could pool our expertise more efficiently and learn along the way

    2. frequently asked questions can be referred to the wiki

    3. a wiki serves to establish common ground and raises linux literacy of the entire community

I know there is downsides as well in that it needs to be hosted, organised and above all maintained. I still reckon that it is a damn fine feature if we could get our heads round it.

I've seen very few good wikis and an awful lot of bad ones out there so the challenge is humongous - but I reckon with the people (and the attitude that comes across) this could be very worthwhile indeed.

If Open Source - you host this forum, right? - says it is a no go then it clearly is a no go and all discussion ends there. But if it were possible...

      Nice link, ta.

Well, but what do you think?

So what would be the difference between your idea of a wiki and e.g. http://kubuntuguide.org/Main_Page ?

Ha! The fact that I wasn't even aware of it speaks volumes

I was thinking of something on kubuntuforums.net written and maintained this bunch of maniacs. But thank you very much for the link, worth a gander I reckon.

Hey, toad, if you got all this extra energy, come out here and help me rake leaves.

(that would be to the desert Southwest USA, where we do, in fact, have trees)
Better yet, get someone to document GRUB2! (good luck on that one!)

Hope I don't get blazed for being OT, but it's not OT -- trying to use toad's enthusiasm here ...

Well, it is not that I have extra energy - on the contrary, I am getting tired of going through the same old stuff over and over again. So a decent wiki entry would work wonders on the mounting front for example. And a bunch of others such as video drivers, etc.

Plus we could benefit from each other's knowledge. BTW, I'd make it a closed wiki for starters.

Also what does OT stand for in this instance, occupational therapy?

                Re: we need a wiki

What's the matter with This Wiki? When this post was written there were 397 articles that had Kubuntu in their titles and 2585 that had the word kubuntu in their text. Admiitedly, a great many are worthless, but I find myself referring noobs to things like the RestrictedFormats page frequently.

                  Re: we need a wiki

I kind of think that there are already so many wikis out there and would rather not take on an additional public posting area. I agree with the need for a centralized location for commonly needed information. If you are interested in helping moderate such a site, maybe you can contact the owner of either of the sites mentioned in previous posts.

By the way, I am in London this week, in case anybody else lives around the Bond Street tube station (or any station for that matter - got the subway pass) and would like to get together.

                    Re: we need a wiki

How could anyone be against a wiki?

But, I really wonder about the "net added value" of it, to coin a term. Specifically:

                    Code:
                    1. we could pool our expertise more efficiently and learn along the way
We can also do that here (and have).

                    Code:
                    2. frequently asked questions can be referred to the wiki
But that's no easier than referring them to the link above, or to the many preceding threads that address their FAQ.

                    Code:
                    3. a wiki serves to establish common ground and raises linux literacy of the entire community
It can -- the one that Al mentioned does that, along with above link to the "How Tos". But this Kubuntu Forums site is already common ground, for KDE-on-Linux questions, right?

I guess what I would really like is a menu list of the top 100 questions and answers. So we could answer a post like this:

                    "#43"

                    Now there's an efficient answer!

I think dibl's idea is priceless!

A list of top 100 issues/topics would be good. Question though is how to decide what is in there.

                        Well, sort of.

I reckon the ideal would be certain howtos/the top 100 that can be edited by not only one person, but a bunch of selected individuals - is that possible OS?

And I wish I were in London. Have a pint of Fullers for me, will you?

Yep, I could use the help on leaves as well.

Anyway, interesting ideas. Huge undertaking. I actually thought the How TOs were always good, just need to be more centralized. But how? Couldn't tell you.
