"Spew Your Political Rant Here (and nowhere else!)"

Once in while, as we were reminded recently, someone just can't hold it back, and has to share their politics, in a blatant and/or obnoxious way. Which should (and does) get their post nuked, and maybe the poster banned, since it's obviously not a forum for political debate.

I don't know if it would help to put a main section, maybe alongside Community Cafe, with a title similar to what I wrote for this post. I was thinking maybe it would serve as a "rant magnet" -- it probably could be set to purge anything older than 12 months -- I don't know why we would want to keep such stuff, but if it gave someone a place to vent, so they didn't have to be banned ....

I dunno -- just a passing notion that came to me today.

That's a nice idea, but if someone wants to rant about something, they should go to myspace.com or facebook.com, not bring that nonsence hear where people are trying to help others

      Hey why not...
I mean even if this is a forum that provides help for Kubuntu users there should be an Thread where you could spew yourself in anyway.
But I thought that Community Cafe is place even for rants?
Or make an "spammers" den where deletion would be done on weekly basis.
I saw this on one of forums that I use to visit...
      But I agree.

I would need a thread to "relief" myself of the burden that is Irish vote NO to Lisbon strategy

Out of curiousness what was the example of political rant on Kubuntu forums??
I'm magnet for errors, problems and bugs...

Hah! Why would a guy who lives at Pripjatz care about Irish politics?

He and his posts are all gone. Some real sarcastic/obnoxious stuff that was totally unrelated to the OP's question on that thread.

I think that you do know that I don't live in Pripyat (that would be dangerous, because of high level of radiation)... I don't even live in Ukraine.
I live in Ljubljana capitol of Slovenia, which is ending its presidency over EU council...
Plus I'm studying Political Science, so I am more interested in politics as probably some others on this forum

A beautiful city, so I am told. I hope life brings me a chance to visit Slovenia and Ljubljana, some day.

I sometimes find it interesting to bear bait and play devil's advocate when people get into political debate. As long as there's an established rule where people absolutely must keep it in the Political rant section of the forum, I'd love to play.

...should I wait until someone agrees to this idea before I get out my hazmat suit to start slinging the dren?

It would be interesting to just read and follow. Sometimes you can get a good laugh out of stuff like that (based on your own views of course ).

Re: "Spew Your Political Rant Here (and nowhere else!)"

For those who aren't familiar with the incident that prompted this thread, I suppose I should explain.

A few days ago the mods got a complaint, about an off-topic (political rant) post in a thread started by a user who was having a problem getting his laptop display driver to behave. I sent the ranter a PM to the effect that (a) it was discourteous to the member whose thread he had hijacked, (b) that there WAS a place for such rants, specifically, the casual talk forum, and (c) why would a user from the Phillipines or Belarus (2 random examples) give a hoot about American politics.

Another mod, kinder and more courteous than I, also replied. We exchanged PMs agreeing to give the fellow 24 hours to move his post on the basis of the possibility that he had simply messed up a cut and paste and wasn't even aware of what he had done. Unfortunately, that was not the case. A couple of inappropriate posts in the thread by the user in question caused me to delete everything from the thread except the original query. (I would have helped, if I knew anything about the problem at issue.) The ranter then posted a series of messages to a number of threads saying that he could answer the question but he wouldn't because the mods were censoring him. He then removed all his other posts, from the forum.

He was not banned and has not been banned. He had helped a number of people and he was certainly entitled to a political opinion even though a thread about a laptop display adapter was not the right place for it.

At the risk of painting a big ol' bulls eye right between my eyes, I'm going to admit that anyone who jumps into political fray admitting they're mostly there to bear bait and play devil's advocate, who can not take teasing and being laughed at, shouldn't be playing in the mud pit.

That said, laughing at me means you don't get cookies, and my cookies bring all the boys to the yard. :P

You can do that after we have had a nice bottle of swiss red. I might even tag along

why would a user from the Phillipines or Belarus (2 random examples) give a hoot about American politics.
I could think of a lot of reasons why they and a few others would give a hoot or three

I generally don't really enjoy political discussions on forums unless they pertain to and compliment / comment / criticize the policies behind a certain product / service and thus add to a productive discussion and maybe help further that product / service.

I don't care either way about politics, but personally I don't necessarily want them in an OS-related forum. There are plenty of other places for that all over the web, and in my personal experience the heat and negativity that can build up in such a sub-forum tends to bleed over into the other channels, which makes for more 'work' for the moderators. This place is a breeze to manage, 100% due to the fact that we have a nice, friendly, calm and collected group of members. AFAIK, I can count the number of deleted posts here (non-spam, etc) on one hand. I would like to keep it that way.

Social/Casual Talk is the appropriate place for OT discussion, and the forum's name suggests how 'deep' it should get imnsho .

I do not support a 'political rants' section here. The existing sub forum is fine for our needs

Maybe it's just me, but maybe the (great and powerful) Mods should start one up on a short term basis just to see how things are going to go, and take it from there?

BTW I'll start it out, and say that Huckabee should have won Republican Nomination. All I'm saying.
