Redesign forum layout

Is it possible to make the layout of the forum sections something like what they use at ubuntuforums. Its much easier to find the forum sections and there sub forum sections. They make better use of the space in the browser. Also when logging in when you already viewing a topic in the forum throws you back to main page, i just want to login to post not to go to a section where i already have been
