    vBulletin

This is a great community surrounding a great Linux distro. However, it bothers me that http://ubuntuforums.org is built with the cutting edge (and expensive) vBulletin forum software, and we have to use this SMF/MKPortal combo.

Is there anyway we can setup a donation fund to buy vBulletin 3.7 and upgrade this site? (I think it's $160)

I've migrated a forum from myBB to vBulletin before and the process was pretty painless.

    Thanks,

    Johnny Utah

I would be very open to this idea, however support for the idea would really need to come from our community. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks Open Source. People can take a look at my reptile forum as a possible avenue for ideas: http://redtailconnect.net

The front portal page is using VBA CMPS 3 http://www.vbadvanced.com/products.p...fo&productid=4 and the forum software is vBulletin.com 3.6.9 http://www.vbulletin.com/

There are a million other vBulletin websites that can offer ideas. I of course like mine a lot!

                    Re: vBulletin

My thought as well. What are the benefits of it over SMF? Why incur a new cost? Why risk any losses due to a conversion?

We aren't Ubuntuforums, we aren't competing with them, and I don't see the need, necessarily unless there is a definite benefit in admin or user experience.

                        Re: vBulletin

No, it runs on any server with php and mysql, which are OS independent. iirc Open Source is simply currently using a web host that uses windows servers.

I believe there is a huge benefit in both admin and user experience in using VBulletin. Although this is only my opinion, most of the biggest boards on the internet are using VBulletin for this very reason.

I'm not saying we are competing with Ubuntu forums, but I think this site would rock with VBulletin.

I think OS would need to know how it would be easier, how it would rock , maybe give us a contrast/compare of the 2 forum scripts

As a user, I have no difficulties either here or over in ubuntuforums. My admin tasks here are neither difficult, but there aren't any big tasks I have to accomplish as a mod either
