    Switch to Kubuntu

I made the permanent switch to Linux just after christmas 2013 and Ive never looked back.
I started with Ubuntu 13.10 whilst waiting for 14.04

When 14.04 came out I installed the Ubuntu version, then discovered Kubuntu was the desktop for me, and I installed it ontop of the original Ubuntu destop.
    So my question is,
Now Im happy with Kubuntu, would it be better to do a fresh install of Kubuntu rather than the current Ubuntu with Kubuntu on top? (if you see what I mean!)
Before I get too many apps etc installed on my current system.

    Thanks

Somewhere, there's a list of all the apps in Ubuntu-desktop so that you can uninstall them all in one go. I've just had a look and I can't find it (only out of date lists) but that doesn't mean it isn't there somewhere!

If you could uninstall the Ubuntu-desktop and all the packages that came with it you'd basically be left with Kubuntu.

Without the list, though, removing all those old apps could take ages. If you think it be nice to have a clean slate then a reinstall may be easiest!

Congratulations on going 100% Linux BTW

Would save some hassle if I could remove the Ubuntu stuff.
But if not, if I download the kubuntu from here and install, I assume its 100% kubuntu without any ubuntu stuff?

Depends what you mean, really! Ubuntu and Kubuntu are the same under the hood, they just have a different desktop environment and default apps.

If you download a Kubuntu .iso and do a fresh installation you won't have the Unity desktop any more, and like I said you'll have different apps (Kate instead of Gedit etc.)

If you really miss any of the old apps then you can always reinstall them, but sometimes this pulls a load of dependencies which some people don't like because it takes up some disk space. I don't really see it as a problem though, hard drive space is cheap and apps aren't massive... use whatever suits you best, unless you have a really small hard drive!

As for that list of unity stuff I mentioned earlier (so you can remove it instead of doing a fresh installation of Kubuntu), I just ran this command on my system:

        Code:
        sudo apt-get install -s ubuntu-desktop
The -s option runs a simulation only (i.e. I didn't really install all that stuff).

Here's what it told me it would install:

        Code:
The following extra packages will be installed:

So, we can assume that all of the above is Unity stuff that isn't required for Kubuntu (or it would have been installed already on my system).

So, you could log in to a Kubuntu session and do:

        Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge *list above*
...and that should give you the same as you would get by doing a fresh Kubuntu installation, without having the fuss of actually reinstalling.

        Hope that helps!

after you remove the list then install the package kubuntu-desktop (just incase) . it will restore all the default stuff for kubuntu.

            G'day folks

I am a recent convert to *buntu, from WinXP, and also prefer KDE. I have been playing with multiple install combinations on multiple machines to also ascertain whether a clean Kubuntu install is preferable to kubuntu-desktop over Ubuntu. I don't have concerns about disk space, and wondered if the Ubuntu base may be providing something extra, without obvious clutter.

One important difference I have noticed is that Kubuntu doesn't install driver software for the scanner in my HP Photosmart c7280 MFP, whereas Ubuntu does. The print function works with the "c7200 series" driver provided, but not the scanner. The Muon Discoverer does not seem to have the HPLIP package in it, but after downloading the Ubuntu Software Centre, I was able to install the HPLIP Toolkit, and set up the MFP properly, so the scanner now works on the Kubuntu only installations.

I haven't finally decided, but am leaning towards the Ubuntu with kubuntu-desktop as my preference, for what it's worth in this discussion.

            Cheers

When I install Kubuntu, I have a list of extra packages to install. For my HP printer, I install "hplip-gui" and "xsane". The latter gives the scanning capability.

Thanks NoWorries. I guess if you know what you want you can customise selectively. I am still building up such knowledge. I installed other scanner apps including xsane, but the problem only got fixed using HPLIP Tool Kit.

In my so far limited experience I have valued the availability of extra packages to try out without having to explore to find them. In my initial explorations with Ubuntu 13.10, I installed XFCE and LXDE desktops as well as KDE. The only partial downside seemd to be the crowded menus. (My three machines are old, so experimenting to find best video result was a priority initially.)

Other things noticed were that gparted seemed to be able to perform a partition adjustment I was experimenting with, whereas KDE Partition Manager would not, and the LXDE file manager performed a file search by dates better than the others.

I imagine in the future I will reach the stage of being able to set up a new installation with everything I have come to know and love, as you seem to have done.

                  Cheers

Muon Discover while now the default is not the best package manager for finding some non application stuff. You may want to use the Muon Package Manager for that it is not as flash but is much more detailed and easier to use.

I also noticed there is a "Muon Software Centre", which does not list HPLIP either. I found Muon Package Manager in this software centre and installed it. It provided a comprehensive list of packages under the heading of HPLIP, a couple of which have not been installed on my system yet, perhaps because they are in the Trusty Proposed phase.

                      Cheers
