    Congratulations for your great job

    Hi,

I just installed Kubuntu 12.04.1 in my Netbook and it works great.

Please keep up the great job you are doing.

    Regards

Welcome to KFN. We aren't the developers, so we can't take credit. We are however, Kubuntu advocates.

Yeah, I have been using linux for a little while now but was using GNOME; I was getting really frustrated with it and finally decided to try KDE. I wish I had tried using KDE way earlier! Kubuntu looks so nice, personally.

Yes, KDE is very powerful, and is a more 'traditional' desktop environment compared to the many efforts being made to unify smartphone / tablet interfaces with a desktop one. And, for all its warts, most of us come from a Windows background, and KDE is most 'windows-like'. It is therefore almost immediately familiar, which levels out the learning curve to a large degree.

I actually come from a mac background so I had to make a dock with the panel. Quick question, is there a dock made for KDE?

You can use an Icon-Only Task Manager that works similar to the MacOS dock. Just click on the "cashew" in the panel and search for "Icon-Only" and it should show up ready for you to move it into the panel (just remove the regular task manager beforehand to avoid any confusion). You can easily right click on the icon of the open program and check "Show a launcher when not running" to "dock" the icon to the panel. I have it on my panel and it works beautifully.

Okay, thanks for the advice. I hadn't thought of using that.

Mac OSX is a full Unix, the same as Linux. You should feel right at home.

I did a quick look in the repository, doing a search for 'dock' and it came up with several, including 'docky'. I've never liked docks (I find they take up too much screen space. I prefer a very thin ribbon at the bottom), so I've never used one. But I have heard good things about 'docky'.

Ooops. Seems like docky is a Gnome app.... However, with that said, I see a picture of it on the web running on KDE wallpaper. One can run Gnome apps on KDE and vice versa, but you have to load a lot of Gnome libraries to do it. I use Synaptic (Gnome) rather than Muon (KDE), for instance.

In any case, here are some others you can look at. A search on Google will probably find more as the page I linked is from 2009 and may no longer apply.

                Frank.

Yeah, I have used Docky, Cairo, and AWN from when I was using GNOME, but they are all for GNOME. I will have to look into Kooldock though.

So Kooldock is no longer developed. But Docky works and actually looks pretty good for being a GTK app. I haven't tried Cairo and AWN, but I have always liked Docky better so I will stick with that.
