    Trim the bloat.

    Hello all!
I'm in the process of switching my home server over to Kubuntu from Suse 10.1. The reason is bloat. Suse has become a monster! This brings me back to my original goal here. I want to make this machine slim and trim. I want to get rid of most of the things I don't need.

Here are the uses for this PC:

File server using SAMBA and/or NFS
    Firewall (currently have Firestarter installed)
    Sharing my dialup connection.
    KDE desktop.

That's it, that's all I want it to do. I do however want it to do these things in the most efficient way possible.

I'm open to suggestions on where to start ditching things, improving system speed along with network performance, etc. Any and all feedback would be helpful.

**Note: this is technically an older Dell Dimension desktop with 2nd hard drive (150 GB) and not really a server by most standards.

That article uses ubuntu but its easily adapted to kubuntu and it will take you through it step by step. One thing I can tell you is don't use the desktop cd to install a server if you do as you have already seen there will be to mush stuff to uninstall. Anyway read the article it will tell you where to get the right cd and everything else you need.
