I'm neither advocating nor complaining, just simply curious.
What is so sacred about Neon that it deserves an entire thread in the Kubuntu forum? I realize it's built
on a Ubuntu base but so are about a hundred other distros.

Nothing sacred, simply many of us here use it, and have for years.
It also is created by the same team that created Kubuntu, so it is kinda 'family' in many ways.
Note that the original Project Neon started by Kubuntu devs back in ~2008

Well that splains it. Thanks. I like it too. When I rebuilt my desktop I narrowed it down between Neon and Kubuntu as my main
system. Pretty obvious which one I settled on.
