Problem with audio in media players

I installed Kubunto ater running gentoo during 3 years. I thought it would be easy to get the sound and video work. But I was wrong.

I can play audio (Mp3's) in XMMS and I can play mpeg-files in Kaffeine but I don't get any audio. I have downloaded every important package but I still don't get audio.

I have also dowloaded "Totem Movie Player" But I can't play anything in Totem. I get a warning saying:

"Totem could not play 'file:///home/lucas/Desktop/movie.mpeg

You do not have a decoder installed to handle this file. You might need to install the necessary plugins."

Now: Which decoder and plugins do I need? Does anybody know??

I would recommend you install Automatix. This will enable you to add all the missing bits and pieces you need. Follow these instructions:-

So I cant install these pacakages and I still can't play any movies in totem (doesnt start) or kaffeine(no sound). But XMMS works. What is wrong. I dont like this #&%$!

If you follow the links in the "Before You Start" section of my link above, you will find instructions on how to enable the needed repositories for most of the packages you need (they won't show up unless they are enabled), and in the detailed instructions, there are directions for getting w32codecs.

You need to install the extra repositories.

download this guide and it will help you install any programs.

The reason you get those errors using apt-get is because the out of the box kubuntu has only open source repositories enabled. once you replace the repository list will you be able to download all of these programs like w32codecs, etc.
