    Encryption with manual partitioning

I'm planning to do a fresh install with the upcoming new release. I've been upgrading over the last six or so releases so I figure it's time for a fresh start. I've got backups and everything ready but I want to go with full disk encryption this time. I've never used it under Linux. I used it during my Windows days and I do use an encrypted external drive for my personal stuff via verycrypt. However, despite my attempts to fully understand full disk encryption, I'm confused on certain issues.
    1. Issue no .1 is it true that full disk encryption uses LVM and if so, if one has a partitioned drive with another OS, what happens then?
    2. Issue no. 2 - ever since I started using Linux, I've always been in the habit of using manual partitioning, always leaving "/home" on a separate partition. It makes is much simpler for re-installs should something really go wrong as all my configuration settings would be kept. But again, I'm told that this isn't possible as full disk encryption uses LVM.
Just need clarification on those two points and how best should I go about doing it.
