    DVD ripping applications

I've set up a new system where I use Plex under Kubuntu to stream my movies from my PC to my Roku box on my TV. It's pretty cool. I have a zillion DVDs that I've bought that I want to rip to MKV, MP4 or AVI so that they can be incorporated into the system. I can do it on Windows. I use AnyDVD to beat any copy protection that might be there and then use Windows-based ripping software. I don't feel bad about breaking the copy protection because these are movies I paid for. I'm not sharing the video files with anyone. It's only for my convenience; essentially they're backup copies.

It would save me the step of going over to my Windows computer if I could rip these DVDs on my Kubuntu PC. I've been googling around and have found that programs like Handbrake and AcidRip exist. What I'm wondering is if anything like AnyDVD exists in the Linux world that ensures I can rip any DVD that I want to. Again, I'm not ripping off the movie companies. I paid for these DVDs. It would be great to have them all digitized into my system. Many of the DVDs are foreign films that will need subtitles. The Plex software can use both subtitles embedded into an MKV file or subtitles that are in separate srt text files. If need be I can always download subs from various sites on the Internet. If need be, I can always adjust the timing of subtitles. I'm used to using Windows applications for that, but I have found Aegisub and Jubler for Linux.

If anyone else out there is doing this in Linux, I would be interested in your experiences and what applications you prefer and if you've encountered any problems due to copy protection.

Handbrake is what I use and John has a PPA so it's easy to update. I too have a Plex server.

I prefer MP4 over MKV because it's a bit more universal and I like tagging and I think MP4 has more tagging abilities - I could be wrong though. Either way, Handbrake can encode to both. The only DVDs I've had trouble with (I too have a huge movie and music collection) I had to copy the VOB files to a folder first, but I only had to do that once or twice. Generally, once you have libdvdcss2, libdvdread4, and libdvdnav4 installed, you shouldn't run into any problems.

Okay, I was unable to rip my DVD in the Linux version of Handbrake, but I was able to in the Windows version. The Windows version had the assistance of the application, AnyDVD. That application gave me the message "removed CSS copy protection." The Linux version of Handbrake cannot load the DVD. I wonder if there's some Linux app that can act like AnyDVD by removing the copy protection.

by default libdvdcss is not included in ubuntu . you will need to add the repo from VLC .. and install the package. VLC is the place where that libary lives . please see here http://www.videolan.org/developers/libdvdcss.html

I use MakeMKV. Works perfectly on dvd and BluRay. You'll probably pay for it after using a few times but it's worth it, believe me.

Sorry to bother you man but I have a very similar question. It seems that you know well about DVD ripping. Recenly, i am using this software (WINDOWS APPLICATION ONLY LINK - DELETED BY ADMIN) to convert my DVD files to iPhone. The output image is very nice while the sound is out of sync. A man told me it was casued by the software itself. However, I have used it several times before and they all worked well. Does anyone has an idea how to deal with this problem?

No doubt. A first post to a commercial product. It offers a "free download" but at the very bottom of the page is the fine print -- "Trial".

MakeMKV will decrypt. Handbrake and other usual programs can handle it from there. MakeMKV has been in beta seemingly forever but works as advertised.
