    Problem in Konsole

I tried to enter Konqueror via sudo in Konsole so that I could place two files in a root folder,

    ie I typed: sudo konqueror

    I got the following error:

    Code:

    Any ideas?

All I've done today is installed Automatix, and when it asked me if I wanted the resources restored I said no (because I wanted automatix to update etc) I THOUGHT this was the right thing to do, now all my ones that had http://gb.**** have now changed and the gb has been removed... not sure if that's right?

Or if it even has anything to do with the above problem

    I'm so stoooooooooooooooooooooopid

    Re: Problem in Konsole

well, the first part of the error message is harmless.

the second part of the errors I'm not sure, but it might be caused by trying to run Konqueror using sudo. Never use sudo when launching GUI/graphical apps. use kdesu instead.

    Code:
    kdesu konqueror
About the removal of "gb." in your sources.list, nothing really wrong with it. It only means that you won't be using a mirror, which would probably be closer to you, and probably be faster. Anyway, the "gb." mirrors are problematic, and most replace it with "uk." So you're quite safe.

      Re: Problem in Konsole

nope I tried kdesu konqueror and I'm STILL getting the same stuff, that it can't launch the Klauncher, and Konqueror says "can't talk to klauncher"

I honestly don't know what the flip I've done but it was working before I re-installed and removed ubuntu all together

It really seems something to do with your /etc/apt/sources.list. Could you post that for us?

And get rid of the cat, that can't be of any assistance. Mine's not.

When Automatix finished doing everything it installed it gave me the option to restore my original sources list, or not.. I chose not because I THOUGHT that automatix needed to update the sources list so that it could auto update.. I could be very wrong though

I THOUGHT it might be something to do with that, as everything was fine UNTIL I installed Automatix, I really haven't got a clue when it comes to Linux, I'm surprised I can still get on the internet rofl

I could do with this sorting pretty soon, otherwise I'm going to have to give up and re-install AGAIN

klauncher is a daemon responsible for launching various KDE services, so I would try first logging out and back in to see if that fixes it, or using this command in a terminal:
              Code:
              kdeinit
klauncher is probably not running, and restarting KDE might fix that, especially if you have just updated kde without logging off and back on to unload the old bits and load the new ones.

                I got this:

not sure whether I should remove what it says to remove? and I don't know how to "start dcopserver" unless it just means a reboot and CTRL, ALT, BCKSPCE?

                Code:
                carol@carol-desktop:~$ kdeinit
                kdeinit: Shutting down running client.

that it is not already running, remove /home/carol/.DCOPserver_carol-desktop__0
                and start dcopserver again.

it is safe to remove that file, and you don't have to reboot, just log out and back in. Does simply logging out/in fix your problem?

I've restarted my pc more times than I've had erm... yeah.. to no avail...

So. please tell me what do I do now?

Do I go and delete that file... then what do I do?

I forgot to mention (doh, might be important) that my home directory could still have gnome files/commands or whatever on, because I couldn't format it, I didn't have anywhere to store all the 30gig of things I wanted to keep could this be causing a problem?

                      Re: Problem in Konsole

No problems having gnome files around But do check that you have room left on that drive, that it is not full just in case. Having a separate home partition is a very good way to keep from loosing your personalized stuff.

But do delete anything in your home dir that looks similar to .DCOPserver_carol-desktop__0. I have 2, so try deleting :
                      .DCOPserver_carol-desktop__0
                      and
                      .DCOPserver_carol-desktop__:0

                      and then log out/in

If you have not set up anything important in your KDE setup (ie Desktop settings, email, etc) you may also consider deleting (or renaming - to save any config files) your /home/carol/.kde directory. This in essence gives you a clean "virgin" desktop and that sometimes does the trick as well, without having to do a full install.

                        It's a 200 Gig drive rofl

unless a complete re-install (Again) is necessary, this would not be an option, I have sooooo much stuff set up now

I will try and find the .dcop server files and see how that helps

ok, I found those two .dcop files, deleted them and then logged out, CTRL ALT BcSpc aswell, and I still can't get into konqueror via root (sudo OR kdesu)

I did a search and apparently there's one of those .dcop files in the root directory too, but obviously I cannot delete that one because I can't get flippin root access.

                          I'm going to cry.

Your sources.list seems fine, I'm not really sure why I thought the problem might be there. While I'm unable to help, Im sure someone here will. Re-install, in my opinion, is a really last resort. Hang in there.
