Last night whilst I was bored I decided to download Kubuntu 15.04 Alpha 2 just to try it out and see how plasma 5 was coming along.
After burning the iso to a spare DVD-RW I booted up the laptop.
On first impressions plasma5 looks nice with its breeze theme and whilst running several apps discovered that some were still for plasma desktop version 4 and a few were for the new kf5 (KDE Framework 5). I was a little disappointed to see that Dolphin had not yet been developed / compiled for kf5 but I'm sure that will happen with plasma 5.3 or 5.4.
Then using ksysguard I wanted to see how much RAM this plasma5 desktop was using on my aging 32 bit laptop with 1GB RAM. I was a little shocked to see that it was using 399MB (that was without any other apps running, just the desktop and associated packages). But then I have also tried out Gnome-shell 3.14 and that used 450MB, so it was nice to see that plasma 5 is "lighter".
Even though this is in Alpha development and therefore is not classed as stable, running it from the live DVD appeared to be quite stable. I never spotted any crashes of apps or the desktop itself.
When Beta 1 becomes available I will also try that.
For comparison reasons I had also tried Magiea 5 beta 3 which is still using KDE4 (version 4.14), once again I never experienced any major issues running it from a live DVD and discovered that memory usage for this was 245MB, much lighter than PLasma 5 but I wonder if that was because it didn't have enough "stuff" running in background than Kubuntu 15.04.
