    Tried Kubuntu 15.04 Alpha 2

Last night whilst I was bored I decided to download Kubuntu 15.04 Alpha 2 just to try it out and see how plasma 5 was coming along.

After burning the iso to a spare DVD-RW I booted up the laptop.

On first impressions plasma5 looks nice with its breeze theme and whilst running several apps discovered that some were still for plasma desktop version 4 and a few were for the new kf5 (KDE Framework 5). I was a little disappointed to see that Dolphin had not yet been developed / compiled for kf5 but I'm sure that will happen with plasma 5.3 or 5.4.

Then using ksysguard I wanted to see how much RAM this plasma5 desktop was using on my aging 32 bit laptop with 1GB RAM. I was a little shocked to see that it was using 399MB (that was without any other apps running, just the desktop and associated packages). But then I have also tried out Gnome-shell 3.14 and that used 450MB, so it was nice to see that plasma 5 is "lighter".

Even though this is in Alpha development and therefore is not classed as stable, running it from the live DVD appeared to be quite stable. I never spotted any crashes of apps or the desktop itself.

When Beta 1 becomes available I will also try that.

For comparison reasons I had also tried Magiea 5 beta 3 which is still using KDE4 (version 4.14), once again I never experienced any major issues running it from a live DVD and discovered that memory usage for this was 245MB, much lighter than PLasma 5 but I wonder if that was because it didn't have enough "stuff" running in background than Kubuntu 15.04.

Nothing to do with the plasma. The KF5 is KDE Frameworks version 5. To get the Dolphin to use KF5 it need to be ported from Qt4 to Qt5 and from the KDE4 libraries to the KF5. KF5 Porting Progress: https://kdepepo.wordpress.com/2015/0...ting-progress/

    Kubuntu 15.04 alpha 2 is using KF5 5.7.0, Plasma 5.2, KDE Applications 14.12.2.

I installed the daily build to bare metal a couple days ago. Seems very quick. I have Dolphin, but it's not fully functional at this point - near 90% though.

I rather like the "flat" look of breeze, but I want transparency on desktop widgets that I'm not getting yet.

At least @here, the Nouveau driver is broken. I could only stay up for a couple minutes until the desktop locked solid. I was finally able to boot to text mode and install the nvidia driver and now it appears stable and is definitely faster.

I'm migrating settings and preferences now as I plan on moving to it after full release. I tend to keep the previous install and do a new install along side, keeping the old install as a backup.

Next release (15.10) I'm going to keep a snapshot instead of doing a new install. Should be a great experiment!

I'm probably being thick here, but what do you mean keeping a snapshot of 15.10? Do you mean just booting up from a live DVD (iso) ?

What is missing in Dolphin? I haven't noticed anything myself, but since I have been using Plasma 5 for quite a while now, I probably am used to it as it is at the moment.

            Dolphin KF

Left: Dolphin KF - Right: Dolphin KDE4

Both with the Kubuntu 15.04 A2.

Ha! Also, remember, if you stay up for more than eight hours, seek medical attention immediately!

NickStone: Using btrfs filesystem (dibl and myself have done so for years and posted extensively about it) one can snapshot a subvolume and "rollback" to one's previous state. I have used it in practice, but never had to rely on it. It would be a great experiment to snapshot 15.04 before upgrading to 15.10 and then boot back into 15.04 to test functionality.

claydoh (and by extension, rog132): Honesty, the only thing not working that I saw immediately was rootactions service menus. Might not be a dolphin issue exactly. I'm not using it daily yet, so I haven't dug that far into it.

deguire: I'm pretty sure my wife would send me to the doctor LONG before 8 hours.. ROFL! BTW, Steve; You have to talk to your Urologist first...

                    KF5 Service Menus

                    Earlier: https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showth...l=1#post367207

The Kubuntu 15.04 is a hybrid system. There are KDE4 applications and there are new KF5 applications. The KDE4 parts are looking the service menus from:

                    ~/.kde/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/
                    and
                    /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/

The new KF5 service menus are at:

                    ~/.local/share/kservices5/ServiceMenus/
                    and
                    /usr/share/kservices5/ServiceMenus/

To get the KF5 service menus to the KDE4 applications the KF5 service menu directory can be linked to the KDE4 directory or vice versa...

I just installed a root service menu from within dolphin, and it works fine here. Rog132 beat me to the file locations part , so that is something to note for upgraders.
