trying to recover data from damaged hard drive

I used to use Gentoo and have now just started with Kubuntu...

My previous hard drive failed, with all of my data...I was able to copy some of the files to another drive, but I'd like to get the original data from this damaged drive...

What would be a good program to use?

When I connect the drive via a USB to SATA/IDE cable and KDE Partition Manager, it shows my drive, but doesn't show anything on it...
