New Kubuntu user, advice on next steps

Have recently joined the ranks of new users of Kubuntu co-habitating
with a winXP dual boot install. (xp's days are number)

Now that I have a very pleasant and stable OS environment to work from,

what should I consider next as in virus protection and a firewall for my system?

    Looking for guidance or recommendations.

I do have a NAT'd router in place so that part is good.

Unless you run a mail server, then virus scanning isn't really necessary. You can however run clamav if you want, though again, it's really made for mail servers.

As far as a firewall, there are many. I personally prefer ipkungfu since I know the creator/maintainer and have used it for many years. It's available via apt-get and is very simple to setup. I set it up the first time when I had been using Linux for only 10 days. I had no help setting it up either.

There is a newer version than the one available via apt-get if you go to http://linuxkungfu.org

Depending on your internal setup though, ipkungfu, or any firewall for that matter, might not really be necessary. I have 8 boxes in the house and a router as well. This box(my main box) doesn't run a firewall since ssh is forwarded to a different box which has ipkungfu on it. Just a matter of personal preference really on what you want to do.

From one newbie user to another

Im using Guarddog, it has nice GUI and it's very easy to configure.

You can get it easily using apt-get / adept / synaptic.

Reading the manual wouldn't hurt too.
