End of life for laptop battery

I bought a second hand Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop back in 2010 and for the last two years has performed very well. I have just discovered over the past couple of days that I have a problem with the battery. I first discovered the problem when I was running Kubuntu 12.04 from a live disk, KDE told me that the battery had a fault and had a capacity of 48%.

When I connect the laptop to the AC supply it charges up the battery as normal but then once removed from the AC supply it loses power in a short space of time. I was searching the internet last night to see what the life span of a typical laptop battery was and according to Dell the battery lasts on average between 18 and 24 months. Considering that this laptop was built in and around 2007 I think the battery has lasted quite a long time.

I was also looking at the Dell website for a replacement battery and could not believe the price they were offering for a new battery. £103!, I almost fell off the sofa! I then searched Amazon.co.uk and found several replacement batteries much cheaper but are not genuine Dell batteries. The feedback I had read regarding these compatible batteries are quite good but does anyone know if they will last as long as 2 years or so?

I recently went through this with my Asus laptop I got in December 2009, though I did let it get down to 35% before I did end up replacing it. :P (It would hold charge for less than a half-hour.) Luckily, I was able to find the exact model of the battery (by a different manufacturer) for around $40 USD. (~25£) Obviously since I just received the battery within the past few weeks I've not been able to verify its long-term longevity, but I would assume that it would last about as long as my old one.

I reckon anything over a year is a good lifetime for a laptop battery. Though they do sometimes last for 2 or 3 years, admittedly.

And you may as well get a cheap no-name one; expensive branded ones in my experience are just as likely to conk out after a year.
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.
