"Show FPS" desktop effect - what's it all about then?

Via another thread or two I discovered the "Show FPS" desktop effect. Useful at times, I'm sure. But what do all the parts mean? I can't find any documentation on it.

I see the digits showing the current frames per second ... that part I understand!
I also have a blue bar on the left. I think this rises and falls in line with the fps value.
Then I have two graphs updating ~10 times/sec
    - a graph coloured green for low values, yellow most often, with spikes in red and extreme spikes (I think) in black. What's this? It's not in line with the fps value
    - a grey graph that is nearly always at maximum value (but drops, interestingly, when my screensaver comes on - yes, the graph stays on top of the screensaver)

Answers, clues, or links to documentation will be devoured gratefully.
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.

OK, if M Graesslin says there's no documentation then I believe there's no documentation!

Any guesses as to what the two graphs represent?
