    package manager look

    I've been noticing lately how old fashioned the KDE package managers look. I'm not talking about functionality as synaptic has always worked fine for me.

    I'm comparing it to the Ubuntu software center or maybe an android market. They are miles ahead in eye candy. And I think eye candy is important in a package manager.

    Total and complete reliability is way more important than glitz and glamour, which is why I don't use any package manager for actual package management -- I use apt-get from the console.

      Muon software center is easy to use. I think it looks petty nice... What more can you ask for?

      Other than when your new to linux, how much time do you spend in USC?

        I'll go both ways with this. Yes, that it works is THE most important.

        But.... since "Linux" is probably NOT going to be something that one picks up on the five dollar rack in a box store....that is where "software" is sold... when the kids are begging for something to take home and the folks "give in".... I think that it is EXTREMELY important that the "store" gets jazzed/snazzed up, so as to attract attention so that....

        the NEW user has it somewhat burned into their his or her mind that ...."Hey.... I can get extra software, when I "just want something"....like the Big Bang Theory crew browsing the comics in the comic store.... AND.....that they can UNDERSTAND what the software is and does....new descriptions with a fresh viewpoint are going to be more and more important as Linux has a small window of opportunity to get eyes on with things like the dedicated little tablet.

        So...I fall into both camps here.

          I agree. A package/software manager has to work well, and look good as well to attract the new users.

            I most definitely agree that Synaptic (which is the only package manager I use) is ugly, what with its archaic GNOME-ish appearance and everything. However, I don't CARE that it's ugly! Its functionality is what I'm interested in, and as far as that goes it does its job very well.

            Sure, I enjoy the Android market, but "pretty" and "package manager" don't NEED to be in the same sentence for me to be happy.
