    Linux boot failure

My friend is running Kubuntu 11.10 (with ext4) on her laptop, but it's no longer booting. Grub's boot options loads, but just before the part of the boot sequence where the spash-screen appears, it stops booting and the screen's video gets all funny. It looks like someone has started turning up the contrast. It starts in the middles and fades to white, getting really bright, then fades to black. It's really weird. I've never seen anything like it. Windows 7 boots fine, but Windows found lots of errors that it corrected, i think they may have been from bad sectors. I booted to recovery mode and ran fsck. Nothing worked the way it normally works. All of the relevant functions just returned messages saying that it couldn't do it. I then went to command line in case the unlikely event that running updates might help. Both sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade failed to work. I got messages back saying that it couldn't find or access packages and what not. I'm not familiar with any Linux rescue or diagnostic tools except the basic recovery mode stuff. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
