    [SOLVED] Help attaching Tablet to Kubuntu 11.04

    I posted this elsewhere with no real response a probably due to the subject line and location. So, this question is for the Acer Iconia a500. Maybe someone can help with this. Followed the steps and all appear as it should other than Kubuntu still does not show it available or mountable even though I have the entry in fstab.

    Please, anybody have a clue as to what I'm missing?

      What would be expected:

      lsusb

      dmesg

      Nothing more from those two.

        Assuming you followed the instructions 'to the letter', have your logged out/in of KDM and/or rebooted yet?

          Yep about a 100 times after rechecking fstab, udev rule created, yada yada ..... and so on. What I'd like to know, and I thought there used to be, a log of actions from mounts defined in fstab. While writing this I just had a thought. Would an entry for this show in /dev ?

          Edit: Over all I have to say Android isn't half bad. May have to look into Rooting it though due to symlink limitations. Need to see if Kubuntu can be installed. Wow, now that would be something!

            maybe you should check over on planetkde.org it might not be kubuntu but the kde team was helping people get tablets set up w/ an os for playing w/ plasma active.

                Didn't find anything there. Getting ready to try again here but keep watch over /dev to see what shows there. Again, though, does anybody remember there being a logged related to fstab and how it "worked" when called? Does 11.04 still use that?

                  Have you tried a Bluetooth connection?

                    Re: [SOLVED??] Help attaching Tablet to Kubuntu 11.04

                    No, never really been interested in bluetooth but, I found how to get to it and not by the methods I read for Ubuntu. Which really should have been my first clue. Don't follow instructions for Ubuntu as they don't necessarily work with Kubuntu. So, here it is. Kubuntu IDs it as a Camera. In Dolphin if you go to Camera:/ you get the files listed as you would under Windows. I'd prefer it to mount like the instructions state, but there is nothing wrong with this method. After all it does have a built in camera so that may be the why. Now, answer me this. Look below at the Vendor Extension Description?

                    Manufacturer: Acer
                    Model: Acer ICONIA TAB A500
                    Version: 1.0
                    Serial Number: a bunch of numbers
                    Vendor Extension ID: 0x6 (1.0)
                    Vendor Extension Description: microsoft.com: 1.0;

                    Spoke a little too soon. Can see the proper file structure but nothing is accessible beyond that. Can't even create a directory. Must have something to do with the camera protocol? PTP is what is given but the help link above has you install MTP? Am I over reaching there?

                    Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol

                    Explains the microsoft.com. Pity they have a hold on that!

                    Now back to figuring where this failing. Sees it as a camera. Can see the correct entries. Can't access the files or create files. At least I'm closer than I was.

                      The only reason I'm pursuing this is because it should work and it doesn't. I have a great file manager app that can access Linux and M$ shares and does a great job moving files. Others may want to know why too, so I'm trying to figure the combination.

                        I had a similar problem with my iPad Touch 4th gen. I used it to record a lecture but found I couldn't download the lecture file to either Kubuntu or to XP running as a guest OS.

                        It turned out that if I used FireFox and http://192.168.1.101:8080 I was able to "download" the file as a *.caf. Using Audacity I could convert the *.caf to mp3.

                          You just reminded me of an app my sister had on her Android phone. Basically an FTP server utilizized via http. Hmmmmmm... I wonder, but still, the USB connect should work.

                            OK. Solved for the most part. The original article I was using had the 51-android.rules file with the entry of this:

                            Code:
                            SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="0502", MODE="0666"
                            Found an article for XOOM for Kubuntu and that user had this:

                            Code:
                            SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0502", MODE="0666"
                            Rebooted and still no automount based on the FSTAB file entry BUT I was able to mount manually by using:

                            Code:
                            mtpfs /media/a500/
                            and then unmounting with:

                            Code:
                            fusermount -u /media/a500/
                            All worked really well. Kubuntu still seems to pick it up in the Camera portion of the OS and you can see the file structure but no files are visible or folders modifiable. They are with the manual process given so to me that is OK. Already created scripts to run when I do attach it. Works great! I don't know about the entry change in 51-android.rules but since it is working this way why touch it? Now, I wonder why the FSTAB does not seem to automount. What is missing for that? Again, though, manual is fine. Yea!

                              I am seriously considering an A500.

                              How do you like yours?

                              Is has a USB and a mini-USB port. Can a regular USB keyboard be plugged in that Android 3.x would recognize? (I can't use virtual keyboards)
