    What is the best router you can buy for Linux and Windows?

    I guess the title is self explanatory so I'll be just waiting for some interesting answers to come up soon.

    I know that at least some of D-Link routers are Windows compatible only, which is exactly why I hate them. >

    Hi....

    I've had no problems with my Motorola 3347 from Qwest. It's a two in one DSL modem and router.

    However, I'm not sure it would work on another provider's network, though.

      Linksys WRT54GL (Powered by Linux)
      Windows no longer obstructs my view.

        I don't think any router is OS dependent, but perhaps a software-based setup configuration wizard could be - most also use a web browser interface. I have used inexpensive netgears and lynksys in the past, all were fine. Currently I have a cheap rosewill and a cheap dynex unit, both perform well and have lasted longer than all my previous wireless routers, and almost as long as my first (wired) linksys one, so it is hard to say, really. I buy cheap, so that always has its downsides - including fewer features.

              I have two Linksys WRT54G routers. They are the older models. Both have been totally reliable for many years. I have read that they are more reliable because of the older design runs cooler due to the larger case. This is what they look like.

                I bought these about three months ago to replace a pair of Buffalo routers that failed to meet expectations. Build quality appears to be good but routers don't get moved around.

                What's impressive about these things is the feature set. The spousal unit won't allow me to pull cable in her new house so I needed something to get wireless throughout the house without a whole buncha trouble.

                I have two of these things - one set up as master and one as a WDS repeater. Both have the current version of DD-WRT on them and there's one wall and one floor between them. The master gets its share of work as I have one of the old Buffalo routers working as a wireless client to connect a DirecTV box upstairs plus two desktop PCS in the office, plus 200mb powerline networking connecting the upstairs router to a second DirecTV box, PS3 and Xbox 360 plus a wireless connection to the downstairs WDS node. The downstairs WDS node services anybody in the living room with a laptop, which is generally two or three machines.

                The routers have been rock solid and reliably serve up a 300mb connection to my 802.11n netbook. The routers have USB ports so if you wanted to attach a thumb drive or external hard drive and use the thing as a simple server you could. ASUS claims they can be used as a print server but I've never tested that.

                Highly recommended.

                  hands down dollar for dollar the best router i have EVER owned.

                  the stock firmware is vastly superior then that of the linksys routers, (even some of the corporate versions) can be easily replaced w/ ddwrt like any other update for it. GIB LAN usb port, 32MB of ram BGN wifi. i would never waste my money on another router. i've owned a lot of routers, and installed them for many many clients, the only router i get now is the one above..

                  had mine for over a year, a friend of mine has one for about the same time, neither one of us have had any problems. he uses stock firmware mine runs ddwrt. i've also installed this router for about a dozen differnet customers, their networks varry from one machine to dozens. (mostly wifi clients on that one).

                        I'm glad I checked out your link before I posted. I, TOO, like that router you suggested. Its signal in my bedroom, nearly 70 ft away from it and through four walls, is about twice the signal either of my previous Linksys WRT54GL routers would deliver.

                        However, to get a stable connection I had to set
                        Code:
                        options iwlagn swcrypto=1 11n_disable=1
                        in /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf

                        I have been able to achieve a continuous 2.1 Mb/s download speed, well above the speed my ISP said I cold get. Don't know why, not going to ask! 8)

                            I have Tenda router and at first glance I thought it was Windows compatible only router. But as claydoh stated there was a way to set it from a web browser.
                            Four concrete walls and 8 meters is too much for it, so a type of router depends on walls and distance where you will use it.
                            Kubuntu 16.04 on two computers and Kubuntu 17.04 on DELL Latitude 13
