i have a Emachines-ET1161 and im trying to install xunbuntu on it. everytime i go to install it, it stops at 15% and gives this error message "input/output error during read on /dev/sda".

Sounds like the drive you are installing to may have problems. How old is the HDD? When was it last checked for surface defects?Windows no longer obstructs my view.

also check your cd's md5 sum. you can do this from the inital boot menu of the cd choose the "check this cd " option perhaps you had a bad burn or download.
unless of course you have fixed it already ;P

The HDD, even tho only 3 months old, could be bad. Have you checked the drive for bad blocks? The following is a bit old, but still valid:
Howto check disk drive for errors and badblocks
The example assumes ext3 as the file system.Windows no longer obstructs my view.
