Re: So what KDE app's do you use over alternatives?
== KRDC ==
I really like KRDC as a Remote access client -- both RDP (to Windows computers) and VNC connections are smooth and quite nicely implemented. I can start in fullscreen, automate connections, and keep a "bookmark" list of connections. It is also extensible by plugins (which, of course, I always advocate). I prefer it to any GTK-based client.
I use this daily for many remote connections.
(On the flip side, I haven't been impressed with Krfb as a VNC server. I use X11VNC as a server instead.)
== Krita ==
I started using Krita routinely in Natty when Gimp would not install properly.
It is not as powerful as Gimp, but sometimes smaller is faster and less convoluted (and, of course, Gimp is GTK-based while Krita is KDE-based). My learning curve was actually shorter with Krita than Gimp so I was able to be productive with it more quickly.
== Choqok ==
While not part of the KDE framework, I like Choqok as a social messenger client. It has OAuth capability and is a very nice, quick interface. It integrates with system notifications and other KDE integrations well. I like it far better than any other social messaging (Twitter, etc.) client that I've used.
== Ktorrent ==
While some people still like uTorrent and Azureus (and there have been reviews that say KTorrent is a bit slower), I don't have this experience. I find that speed is related to bandwidth and a lot of other factors, not the client itself.
KTorrent is very well integrated, in my experience, and very easy to get up and running. We only use it for distributing company files and for uses such as obtaining Kubuntu OS files (I don't advocate illegal filesharing of any sort).
== Amarok ==
Amarok is a killer media player. It didn't use to be, but it is now extensible with so many cool plugins that I have stopped using any other audio media player (I use VLC for video). It is a bit heavy on startup, so I still use Audacious for instant play, but for an integrated experience, Amarok can't be beat in the Ubuntu/Kubuntu world.
== KSnapshot ==
I use this all the time for screen capture. It's easy to use, so I don't bother with alternatives.
== K3b ==
Burn, baby, burn. K3b just works. No need to try anything else. I have never had a snafu.
== Dolphin ==
Years ago there wasn't much love for Dolphin. I don't use Konqueror or Rekong (and never liked either as a file manager anyway). But I love Dolphin. It is the single program I use most often, and it is the single program that made me switch from Windows (where Paperport was the backbone of my system). I can now do almost everything I did in Paperport on Windows using Dolphin.
I also do a lot of stuff in Dolphin with administrative privileges by starting it:
sudo dolphin
They improved the ability to do this and that really improved my life. They have given a lot of love to Dolphin the past few years -- thanks!
== KOffice ==
KOffice is pretty killer. If I hadn't been locked into OpenOffice (and now LibreOffice) and Mozilla Thunderbird for so long I might recommend it more highly.
For most of my other applications I actually use non-KDE versions. Kopete is sometimes flaky (especially, as mentioned, with Yahoo), although I do use it much of the time. I prefer Konversation (for IRC) to Quassel head and shoulders. I use Mozilla Thunderbird for email/news/feeds over KMail/Akregator. I use VLC for video, though I have Mplayer (and the KMplayer frontend) installed as well. (Dragonplayer for video sucks and Kaffeine is a pain in Natty to set up and they seem to have gutted Kaffeine somewhat (as of Maverick)).

and the latest in technology such as two-way radios and e-mail.
Re: So what KDE app's do you use over alternatives?
Koffice
Kontact
Kolourpaint, if transparency fill is enabled ( it is not in the absolute latest iteration).
Kopete, when it works with Yahoo.
All of the Ksystem stuff of course.
Knights, Kbreakout, Kpatience.
Kaffein/Amarok if not using xmms2.

Re: So what KDE app's do you use over alternatives?
I'm not a KDE fanatic, in that, I don't 'blindly' stick with KDE because everything else 'sucks.' I do prefer KDE, else I wouldn't be using Kubuntu as my Linux OS of choice.
In the past I would install Synaptic as the 'preferred' package manager over KPackagekit. Here, in my Maverick install, I'm using Muon Package Manager over KPackagekit and Synaptic (which is not installed).
In Maverick, I have Oracle VirtualBox installed in preference to virtualbox-ose. Oracle's VirtualBox is simply more robust and has more capability.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Why and how long have you used said app for?
Kate is my favourite Linux text editor so far. The Terminal view is useful.
Kontact, more specifically KMail and KNode. I don't know if there's something I'm doing wrong, but Thunderbird gives me one folder hierarchy per mail account plus another for "Local Folders". In KMail, it's all one; the interface is simple and uncluttered. I've used it for seven years or more, with interruptions (Akonadi not starting properly, etc.)
Quassel works very well for my IRC needs; another clean, fuss-less interface. And I'd love to use Kopete over Pidgin... but I can't get it to connect to Yahoo and the Facebook chat.
Some post-install setup was required, but -- Dolphin. I've been using it full-time since roughly when the "display known 'Places' as top-level folders in the address bar" thing became turnoffable and the "link destination" column was re-added.
I've always liked Kaffeine, but some video files don't work so I'm keeping VLC around.
K3b, KSysguard, Klipper, KSnapshot, Konsole, Gwenview, and other relatively "little things".
And maybe Muon. But Synaptic gives more immediate feedback regarding dependency resolution, so I might go back to that.
Clementine doesn't count, does it?
I haven't had much fun with Konqueror (as a browser), Rekonq, KPackagekit, and KOffice (the font rendering seemed broken).
Re: So what KDE app's do you use over alternatives?
Amarok has been my my fav music player the day i started using kubuntu. Amarok over banshee!
Clementine if i am on ubuntu desktop. just coz amarok is not displayed the way it is displayed in kubuntu.
Gwenview i just love this photo viewer.
digiKam all thanks to this forum i was introduced to my fav photo editing software. gwenview over shotwell.
koffice and libreoffice are at par.. though i like koffice for efficient usage of vertical space, libreoffice is future (decided by all the biggies)

Re: So what KDE app's do you use over alternatives?
The only thing I can add is that I use qmmp as a music player - all I want is something that can play music and ideally use my favorite winamp 2 skin and qmmp will do both.
qmmp reminds me a whole lot of xmms before it went client/server. Highly recommended if you don't need all the bells and whistles of amarok and prefer something light and fast.
