    Media Player for Kubuntu 11.04

    Hi all,
I'm planning for my new installation of Kubuntu 11.04. It has been years since I last installed KDE (Kubuntu 7.04 was the last time) and I want to know what the best player is for a large amount of music (100+ gigs)?
The reason I ask is because my experiences with Amarok in 2007 was that it was very slow in loading and retrieving a large amount of audio files and I am curious if this is still the case.
Currently, I use Rhythmbox in Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and it works alright. I have never used Banshee at all.
So in a nutshell: how does Amarok work now in 11.04? And how does Banshee and Rhythmbox work in Kubuntu 11.04?
    Looking forward to everyone's thoughts...

The answer is there is no 'perfect' media player for everyone. To many variables. But, you might gain some useful insight by reading through Amarok vs Banshee vs Exaile vs Rhythmbox vs Songbird vs Anything Else I Missed on Ubuntuforums.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Thank you for posting the link. I've had a read through and there is some good information--seems that Amarok may still be slow for large collections of music. Nonetheless, the last entry was posted in November 2010 and Banshee, Rhythmbox and Amarok have been updated, as well as the upcoming Kubuntu, so perhaps the landscape is different now?
Also, at the most basic level, how well does Banshee & Rhythmbox integrate with KDE 4.6?

Amarok is the best music player in the world, there's just no doubt about it. I had the same feeling when I was running Opensuse in the stone age, when I was on Windows, and on Ubuntu. It might take some getting used to, but once you do, you'll just love it.

I am personally quite happy with AmaroK. There is some bloat on it that I don't find need for, but as Snowhog stated, theres no perfect player for everyone. I know that for me, AmaroK runs pretty fast[being on a netbook] and I can load my 11hundred song playlist in all of a second without qualms. My music lists at about 10gigs, so that may/maynot be helpful for you.
I have used OpenSUSE, along with Banshee, and from what I've noticed, Banshee does a terrible job compared to AmaroK, concerning speed, how much it slows down the computer while running, running in the background, being able to close properly, etc. etc. Just my insight/observations.

Thanks everyone for the responses so far. I have not used Amarok since the 1.4 days, so I'm definitely going to try it when I install 11.04 next Thursday or Friday.

On another note, is it possible to change song information embedded in the track using Amarok (for example song title, number & track, and so on)? Also, does this become permanent?

One of the things I have been seeking, and unable to find 'til now, is the ability to edit track info within the actual program I use to listen to the music. It's a real pain having to do this using another program altogether.

Clementine is improved version of amarok 1.4. If you liked amarok 1.4 you will probably like clementine.

Amarok definitely can edit the tags in your music, as well as grab that info from the 'net. I think a number of media players such as clementine have this capability as well.

Actually I just had an idea: I will try out both Clementine and Amarok on my Lucid machine, see which one I prefer, and then go with that at the end of the week. Seeing that I'll be wiping my system clean and starting fresh, I might as well experiment a bit...

Re: Media Player for Kubuntu 11.04

Amarok is extensible with scripts (as of version 2.0). I installed a script so that I can get Shoutcast channels in Amarok. I installed a script to Record Streams.

Amarok also has ReplayGain built in (gives the ability to normalize volume across tracks). I also like the Podcast/audioBook search and retrieve features.

Also, there are many built-in plugins -- to download lyrics automatically, download content-specific photos, download Wikipedia information, download album covers and tags (and edit them within Amarok), etc.

It even does this for streaming content. Wow.

I don't know of any other player with the same extensibility. Not even close.

Ubuntu Gnome users aren't going to know about Amarok that much, and I wouldn't trust their opinions.

Yes, it took me a little getting used to, but now I don't use anything but Amarok for most of my music. (I still associate files with Audacious for instant play, though. Amarok takes too long to load for that purpose.)

I'm using Amarok 2.4 in Natty 11.04, but have used Amarok almost exclusively since Lucid.

Indeed, Amarok is one of the reasons I loved Kubuntu with Ibex - the player in Ubuntu/Gnome (can't remember which is was then) drove me nuts - I can't stand the 'tag-hype' - I prefer to sort my music to folder view as I've had it since early 2000, some of my music (old jazz bootlegs and such) lack tags so it make no sense in having tons of music with no labels (and Im to lazy to sort make any tags/labels).

I'm on my Ubuntu desktop now and Amarok isn't the best option here, but wow - Clementine is really neat, swift and flexible - and it got folder view. Still nothing beat Amarok - fetch streams with script is just amazing, and record them if you'd like.

The e-book library librevox is simply brilliant, listened to Karl Marx, and Bakunin some months ago, I really love that feature. I wouldn't trust a Gnome/Ubuntu user either they tend to take what they get - just like any ordinary Mac/Win user. Speaking of Mac, a friend of mine who use Mac got impressed by amarok, he liked the wiki feature, tonight I sent him a link to Clementine since it's cross plattform, I think he'll start to use it

I"m a gnome person (run Mint 10 Main Edition) and the 2 KDE programs i ALWAYS add on is: K3B Burner (better then Brasero) and Amarok (better then Rhythmbox)...trust my opinion?

I like KDE a lot also...especially Kubuntu ( my favorite for KDE)...There are some KDE programs that excel over Gnome Programs and also the other way around (some Gnome programs that are superior to KDE programs)...And i use what works best, regardless of which desktop environment i am in...

I think LottaNZB (a gnome program) is better then kde's NZB program...And i like Pidgin better then Kopete...
Also CheckGMail (gnome) is much nicer then KCheckgmail..

That was just to give a few examples...Again...i "mix and match" i'm not either a gnome or kde "purist"...
