    (SOLVED) Adminstrative help...

    Hi all....

I really need some help from those in this forum who have been administrators as part of their career in IT. I am now working on a system that belongs to the apartment complex where I live to attempt to upgrade the video card. The problem is that whoever installed Windows XP Home on this system locked it down tighter than Fort Knox during a robbery attempt. Many of the functions that are needed to perform this task are unavailable or forbidden. There is no "Run" command and no "Administrative Tools" in the Control Panel. This was all done purposely as this computer is an public access station for those living in the complex.

My question is how do I get to some kind of access point with a login window that will allow me to put in the password? I don't even know how or where to look with much of the OS components disabled and/or missing.

How was XP even installed this way? Is there a special "administrator's" window in Windows XP's setup dialogue that one can choose what features to allow or not allow? How does this work? This is an area of the trade where I don't have any real knowledge.

And just to reassure you guys, this is being done with the full knowledge and approval of the manager who agrees that the system is in need of an upgrade and other changes being made to it. The copy of XP was installed this way because there were constant problems with folks looking at pornography with the previous OS, Windows ME.

I would appreciate the help here.

Or maybe Kannotix, which, I just looked at the site, is now running Debian's latest!! woah!

      Hi Woodsmoke...

Thank you for your reply. I forgot to mention that the same limitations, missing entries and functionality exist (or is present) in safe mode too. There is no BIOS password on this system.

Also, when I try to log off from the account in either mode, it logs itself back on the same account. The safe mode adminstrator account does not appear to even exist.

Would be my guess that the installation was configured (after installation?) to operate in kiosk mode. The person who did this isn't available? The apartment complex manager doesn't have the install CD?

Agreed this is kiosk mode. Wipe and reinstall, they do have the media right?

              Hi Snowhog and Seraphim_72...

              Welcome to the forums, Seraphim_72

I'm afraid not. The owner of my complex (not the manager) lives in Portland, about 100 miles from where I live. At the time this copy of XP was installed, they had an outfit (no idea who) from Portland come down and perform all of the work. I have no idea who kept the CD's but I don't think the manager has them or knows where they're at. The copy they installed is OEM and the Microsoft product key sticker is pasted on the back of the system.

I will have to do some research on kiosk mode. There is no way to gain access in this mode?

                  Re: Adminstrative help...

The whole point of kiosk mode is to prevent casual users from running unauthorized software or changing system settings. As you are not the person who originally configured the system for kiosk mode I don't think there is an easy way. If you are willing to expend enough time and effort you may be able to do it though.

Wipe and reinstall is a good idea, but not practical. Windows XP is pretty much at the end of its useful life by now. Even die hard XPers are switching to Windows 7 en masse, or will be very soon. Some time in the near future there will be no more security updates from Microsoft. Windows users' mentality is to either upgrade with the herd or get left behind to be eaten by predators/malware.

To legally reinstall XP to this computer you must use either the OEM disc which came with it or else purchase a new retail copy. Of course it would be better to just purchase Windows 7 if your going to spend money anyway. At least that way it'll be good to run for a few more years until Windows 8 is out. Otherwise, buy a new machine with Windows 7.

This machine is probably a good candidate for Kubuntu conversion.

                      Hi Telengard...

                      Thank you for your help

I was able to bring up the task manager but, unfortunately, not the run box. I was told that that particular operation had been disabled by the administrator.

This computer is an old Compaq Presario 5000, model 5WV232, made in 2000. I can personally guarantee you that Windows 7 will never set foot in this system's hard drive! XP is the most it will do, Windows wise. Also, the old Windows ME restore disks that I bought for it (from Compaq) are no longer in existence and the OEM copy of XP it is now using is, unfortunately, not original to the system. However, I did briefly run a copy of Ubuntu 10.04 and it seemed to run fairly well. Converting this system over to Linux is a possible option provided that there is a program or a way to keep folks from looking at pornography and that Ubuntu will run the wireless card without any hassle or fuss or any questions asked as this is the only way it can connect to the internet. An ethernet connection is impossible in this case.

Money is a huge constraint here. Very little, if any, will be spent. Although, this will certainly be something to pray about. A new or newer system would be a great improvement.

                        Re: Adminstrative help...

Do you get an error message when you try to open a Run box by any method?

I think there is a "Run command" option somewhere on Task manager. My memory of XP is a bit fuzzy since I've been on Kubuntu so long.

I presume you have access to Internet Explorer. Do you? If so then you could, theoretically, exploit IE to run programs. There are many ways to do this, especially on IE6 which came stock with XP.

If you can find any way to execute a command, the one you need is most likely gpedit.msc.

There are also some registry edits which may be helpful in loosening the nut. The command you need is regedt32.

Another thought. Winodws XP loves to execute Autorun.INF whenever you insert a CD or USB storage device.

Even if Windows itself is locked down, you can still boot a Linux live CD and manipulate files in the Windows filesystem.

Lots of information I think will be helpful:
                            • [url=http://ask-leo.com/why_cant_i_enable_the_run_command.html]enable run command on start menu
                            • ratscheddar.exe tool to reset policy.
                            • Trinity Rescue Kit bootable Linux live CD contains tools to manipulate Windows' registry offline.

Most of those settings are done through REGEDIT and/or POLEDIT (either old style POLEDIT or MMC Policy Editor) and if you don't know exactly which entries were altered it will be very difficult to repair. They would still have to have an Administrative account to do this and if they were any reputable firm that set this up I can guarantee you they do not have it as Administrator and that account is locked down as well. After that I can say they probably also removed it's profile name to keep miscreants from trying to find that out. I'm afraid without those pieces and what Registry entries were set your only option is to rebuild. If this isn't for any proprietary purpose and offers no other benefit to tenants other than restricted Internet then I would strongly recommend switching over to a Linux system kiosk.
