I did a lot of searching and thinking before posting this here. I had considered attaching it to my "how to" about Kontact, but didn't know. If someone want's to move it, please feel free to do so.
Anyway, I'm going to slowly, or quickly, work through using different capabilities of Kontact, and Koffice apps because I use them daily.
One of several reasons for this is that there is a perception that Koffice doesn't get "much press" so I want to help change that a little, but others are that I think that any user, but especially KDE/Kubu users might consider using the app if they can see it's capabilities.
So....here we go.

Here is a chronological listing of things that I have done to test the capabilities of the integration of Kontact with other applications, such as Gmail, Kword and also the Android.
Akonadi has been performing very well.
After getting things set up I have posted four different appointments on the computer in gmail and added two to google calendar on the Android phone.
I had to make sure that "syncing" was set on the phone in settings/data synchronization.
All five appointments appeared on the Kontact calendar with the next "mail check" which I have set at the default of 5 minutes.
I set an alarm on one each of the above and the alarm sounded in Kontact on the computer and also the Korganizer daemon that is in the panel.
The contacts, which appeared very nicely at first setup, did not update with "mail check" when I added a contact to the computer contacts in g-mail.
After a while I realized that I had removed the Akonadi daemon in the Akonadi/configure and when I re-added it, then the new contacts appeared with the next mail check. However, one has to go to the contacts section and check to make sure that it is set to the Akonadi contacts daemon and not "local".
As a test of a realtively common operation on the Android phone, I took a picture of the Tux sample that I offered to manufacture for another distro(and it fell on deaf ears) just as a test. I then "shared" the image on both g-mail and in Picasa.
The g-mail share as an attachment to an e-mail took a while, about five minutes, and then it appeared in Kontact, I was able to click the image and chose to open it with Gwenview, and it did appear.
Picasa also took it into "dropbox".
I wrote this post in Kword and e-mailed it from within Kword. When I clicked "e-mail" a box from Kmail popped up and I filled in my e-mail addy for g-mail and clicked send and it went on it's merry way.
Now, OF COURSE, I could do the same thing using LibreOffice writer, but this is a rah rah for Koffice!! lol
I then checked it's presence on the g-mail on the computer and it was there. And, a couple of minutes later it appeared in the in-box of Kontact. I opened it and opened the document. I was presented with Open Office to open it or to choose and app, and I chose Kontact and it did, indeed open.
