Kontact running itemization of things done with Kontact

I did a lot of searching and thinking before posting this here. I had considered attaching it to my "how to" about Kontact, but didn't know. If someone want's to move it, please feel free to do so.

Anyway, I'm going to slowly, or quickly, work through using different capabilities of Kontact, and Koffice apps because I use them daily.

One of several reasons for this is that there is a perception that Koffice doesn't get "much press" so I want to help change that a little, but others are that I think that any user, but especially KDE/Kubu users might consider using the app if they can see it's capabilities.

    So....here we go.

    ****************

Here is a chronological listing of things that I have done to test the capabilities of the integration of Kontact with other applications, such as Gmail, Kword and also the Android.

Akonadi has been performing very well.

After getting things set up I have posted four different appointments on the computer in gmail and added two to google calendar on the Android phone.

I had to make sure that "syncing" was set on the phone in settings/data synchronization.

All five appointments appeared on the Kontact calendar with the next "mail check" which I have set at the default of 5 minutes.

I set an alarm on one each of the above and the alarm sounded in Kontact on the computer and also the Korganizer daemon that is in the panel.

The contacts, which appeared very nicely at first setup, did not update with "mail check" when I added a contact to the computer contacts in g-mail.

After a while I realized that I had removed the Akonadi daemon in the Akonadi/configure and when I re-added it, then the new contacts appeared with the next mail check. However, one has to go to the contacts section and check to make sure that it is set to the Akonadi contacts daemon and not "local".

As a test of a realtively common operation on the Android phone, I took a picture of the Tux sample that I offered to manufacture for another distro(and it fell on deaf ears) just as a test. I then "shared" the image on both g-mail and in Picasa.

The g-mail share as an attachment to an e-mail took a while, about five minutes, and then it appeared in Kontact, I was able to click the image and chose to open it with Gwenview, and it did appear.

Picasa also took it into "dropbox".

I wrote this post in Kword and e-mailed it from within Kword. When I clicked "e-mail" a box from Kmail popped up and I filled in my e-mail addy for g-mail and clicked send and it went on it's merry way.

Now, OF COURSE, I could do the same thing using LibreOffice writer, but this is a rah rah for Koffice!! lol

I then checked it's presence on the g-mail on the computer and it was there. And, a couple of minutes later it appeared in the in-box of Kontact. I opened it and opened the document. I was presented with Open Office to open it or to choose and app, and I chose Kontact and it did, indeed open.

    I just love Kontact!

Just about the only thing that I have not been able to get to work is "return receipt requested" which is technically called a "disposition notification". P'rhaps someone can enlighten me. It may be a situation of only being able to test by sending to gmail and gmail always has problems, don't know. If anyone actually uses DM and so states, then I will take it as a given that it does work. I have not found any recent bugs on it.

And I just love the little "signature" editor!

Which is kind of similar to the old Nvu, don't know, but I took to it pretty easily.

Here, by the by, is a really nice article talking about how to do a nice sig:

creating a better signature for kmail

And I just love the last sentence:

The closer you get to Netscape 4 compatible code the more successful you’ll be in various email clients. I can’t believe I just wrote that.
My students just think it is hilarious that my sig says: "If you don't receive a reply it is because I either don't have a signal or am diving!" and have a little image of me doing the shark experience! lol

    Anyway, I just love Kontact!

Hasn't Koffice been abandoned for Calligra?
I do not personally use Kubuntu, but I'm the tech support for my daughter who does.

        Hi Buddlespit.

Yes, indeedy, "Koffice" is now Calligra, but the Kontact suite is still the Kontact suite.

However, in menu/office/...it is Personal Information Manager as a title, but, possibly depending upon settings, in small gray text below it it says Kontact, and in like manner, there is "Mail Client" as a title, but below that, in gray letters is "Kmail".

        thanks for the question!

          DELETION BY WOODSMOKE

Having to mail out many, many resumes

So...... I knew this was coming months ago and have had applications to private schools, like the [DELETED ]....University of Phoenix..... , ready to go.

So, I strted e-mailing them today, about an hour after I got the notification of my being forced into penury by a liberal agenda.

And.... since I needed to have a report as to whether the e-mail was received, not read, because that is not part of Kontact's capability...yet....

I can confirm that, indeed, disposition notification works.

          Thanks for all the fish.

to do "overdue" does, inded, work

After many months of testing it, with real stuff not made up stuff, which, probably doesn't make a difference, but, since the to-do really does have to work, I waited for the results of real stuff.

There have been many, many problems with the "to-do" function in Kontact over the years and there have been many posts about the bugs.

The "to-do" function seems to be fully functional.

Now, yes, one has to change the progress one's self, but, that is how such things work in most cases.

When one misses a date for the end of a "to-do" Kontact pops a red text summary in the Summary page

A gray label with "Pending T-dos appears

Under that and reading left to right are:

Day, Date, ( X days ago) [1] or [0] as to started, not started, Blue text link to the to-do, red text :

            "overdue"

            or,

            "overdue, not started"

It seems to me, that, finally, the bugs for the to-do function have been cleared.

The devs should be given a hearty "well done" by the community.

This is probably getting kinda boring for the devs, but I had rather a "crunch" today putting out online teaching applications, getting reples etc.

But, ......there are "detractors" of Kontact, but I just can't seem to find a "systemic fault" with the suite. Yes, sometimes there are "bugs", but, to me at least it is about as "full featured" as one can get.

There are "experts" that have noted that it can't do "thus and so" but, in my opinion, for "most folks" it will do what is probably needed for a PIM suite.

And, yes, for folks who don't like "bloat" then Akonadi is large and does consume resources, but I run a pretty old machine and do not seem to have a problem with speed or anything like that.

so again, Kontact just did it's thing in a rather hectic day today.

              good job devs!
