Change GIMP theme without changing all other gtk?

I just thought I'd ask, in case anyone has done it:

I would like to change the theme GIMP uses, without changing all other gtk applications. Basically, I want a dark theme like clearlooks-darkorange, but only for GIMP, not for OOo, synaptic, etc, which would be useless with that theme. I tried putting the theme files in ~/.gimp-2.6/themes; they do show up in preferences/themes, but selecting them doesn't do anything.

    Maybe there's a setting somewhere I missed?

Gimp Themes are not the same animal as Plasma Themes.

Right, those are splash screens, not really themes. They go in the ~/gimp-2.6/splashes directory, not the themes directory. I already have my own custom splash screen.

Gimp is a gtk application, and as such uses the same gtk theme system as gnome.
You can change the theme for all gtk applications using gtk-chtheme, or you can use kde systemsettings to change the appearance of gtk applications running under kde globally, such as using the qtcurve engine.
      Got all that down.

GIMP also, at least when running on windows, and therefore using the gtk system it installs, can use its own gtk themes stored in its own theme directory, located in whatever directory it is in windows (same place the brushes directory is). I can copy gtk themes from gnome's location (/usr/share/themes) into ~/.gimp-2.6/themes in kubuntu, and gimp does indeed find them in the Edit > preferences > theme menu. But when I apply them, GIMP does nothing about it. Well, not quite true, it changes the fonts a little, which means there is something keeping gimp from applying the colors.

So I would like to find out how to get GIMP to use the themes it apparently recognizes as being there. Or else, how to tell kde to use one particular theme for gimp, and not for other gtk applications. Which might not be possible, but I thought I would ask, as a dark theme for gimp would make staring at it for hours on end a lot easier on the eyes.

Thanks, but that's basically gtk-chtheme for windows.
Since GIMP has its own gtkrc, I'll bet its theme can be changed. Still messing with it, I suspect the reason it isn't working has to do with kde-gtk interactions somewhere.

OK, I think this is confirmed as a kde issue.

When I copy the relevant theme gtkrc into the ~/.gimp-2.6 directory, it gives the proper theme and colors when running under gnome, without affecting other applications that use the default theme. Under kde the menus are correct for the gtk theme, however the window backgrounds are set to kde's colors, no matter what I do. I have not found a way around this. I also notice that I have been unable to change the window backgrounds in all gtk applications, using either gtk-chtheme and/or the gtk settings in systemsettings > appearance. Maybe this is a kde bug/feature?

Sorry Doc, I should have checked that link.
              Yes, it is for windows.
