True. But as I posted earlier, he only needs samba if he wants to access windows shares, or other shared folders on a network computer, in this case he can merely mount the drive using whatever file system it is using to have full access to it.
You know Jeremy makes a good point - VLC does have an option to "Open Network Stream". Maybe using this option (it's under the "Media" tab or crtl-n) would solve the OP's issue.
Another way he might play the file is to simply open it in his web browser and see if his browser plugin automatically handles the file. Simply enter in the location bar file://path to file.
