Ram Question - (Not Kubuntu Related)

    Hey folks,
I have a Lenovo G550 notebook. The manufacturer's specs along with others sources I've read tell me that the maximum ram for my notebook is 4GB.

What determines the maximum amount of Ram a computer can recognize? I would like more, but from what I've read, I cannot add any more than I already have.

Quite often this is hardware related, but manufacturers always err on the side of caution. I've heard of Thinkpads which could supposedly only take 2GB RAM running on 8GB. It is often trial and error. Try some hardware forums - there must be more than just you with that laptop

Oh, and make sure you run a 64-bit OS for more than 3GB RAM, but you didn't ask that and I take it you knew that already.

thanks. I sure will. I thought it might be related to what they were willing to 'support' in terms of warranty, although i'm sure I voided that 15 minutes after opening the shipping package

I did learn that much already (though not long ago)

Thank you for the tip. I'll see what I can dig up out there.

You can also download the manual from here and take a look:

        Direct link:
        http://consumerdl.lenovo.com.cn/User...V2.0_print.pdf

Page 41 in the pdf has info about installing memory. You can install two Ddr3 S0-Dimms, so with 2 x 2GB you'll get a maximum of 4GB.
Here's a price comparison if you're looking to buy new Ram: http://skinflint.co.uk/?cat=ramsoddr...54_2048~256_1x
