Is this true. That Kubuntu 10.10 will have Pulse Audio as default install ? I sure hope not.

Re: Kubuntu 10.10 default with Pulse Audio
If it is an issue for you, all you will need to do is "sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio", restart, and live happily ever after without PulseAudio.
But as it stands, there shouldn't be too many problems with it. PulseAudio has had two years to mature since it was initially included with Ubuntu. If anything, we (Kubuntu) did the responsible thing and waited until PulseAudio, the audio card drivers and Phonon matured to a point where most people shouldn't have a problem with the setup. And thanks to KDE's emphasis on freedom, for the time being and for the foreseeable future you will have the option of not using it at all, if you so desire.
In conclusion, it should work fine for most users, but we won't force it on you if you don't want it.

Re: Kubuntu 10.10 default with Pulse Audio
Thanks everyone for your input
This is sad news but I should not be so surprised or shocked by it. I knew it would be only in time Kubuntu would go in the wrong direction as did Ubuntu and Xubuntu to have the worthless pulse audio installed by default. Stopped using Ubuntu over a year ago. I stopped using Xubuntu after Mark the dictator put worthless pulse audio into Xubuntu 10.04 so people would stop leaving Ubuntu to get away from pulse audio. And now I am done with Kubuntu, after over 4 yrs. of using Kubuntu and in fact Kubuntu was my second Linux system that I started using. I have wasted so much time on systems removing/reconfiguring things because of the worthless pulse audio, to still have nasty sound system it is not worth it. I have better things to do. So I only will use a Distro that does not have worthless pulse audio installed by default. What I don't understand is why something so worthless and no one wants to use pulse audio is installed by default, pulse audio is a option to install not a default install. If someone wants to use it great but don't ram it down peoples throat that don't. Will hang on to my last 2 Kubuntu system as long as I can.Registered Linux User #418555
Kubuntu User #9254

aptosid 2010-01 Xfce / aptosid 2010-01 KDE-Lite
Debian Wheezy Xfce / Kubuntu 10.04
aptosid 2011-01 Xfce / aptosid 2011-01 KDE-Lite
Debian Testing Gnome
Debian Sid Gnome
Epidemic 3.2
ALL pulseaudio free by default

Re: Kubuntu 10.10 default with Pulse Audio
Umm, did you read the previous post?
In conclusion, it should work fine for most users, but we won't force it on you if you don't want it.
The exception is that 32-bit firefox will not play its sounds for mail notification, etc on my 64-bit system. This is, I believe, a problem with the 1a32-libs sound packages, and so far I have not been able to fix it. Pulseaudio seemed to handle it just fine. And the lack of asoundconf really stinks, but that is fact of debian in general and not k/ubuntu specifically, as it doesn't exist on my squeeze system either. So I am really considering reinstalling it, and putting up with the fact that I have to use padevchooser instead of kmix, as kmix is pretty much useless under pulseaudio.

I persoally got tired of trying to get sound to work correctly and consistently on any distro, so I tried the dreaded pulse on my Kubuntu 9.10, and lo and behold it just made everything work.
Not everyone has your experiences with this\, and silly name-calling is, well, silly :P

I think kmix in KDE 4.5.1 controls things just fine now that the DE has pulseaudio supportWe only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet. -- Stephen Hawking

Re: Kubuntu 10.10 default with Pulse Audio
My desktop has an onboard soundcard and hdmi audio/video. I can now choose HDMI as the master channel without having to disable the onboard soundchip in the bios.
I have two devices listed in my Playback, and under Capture I have my sound card listed (microphone input), tho pavucontrol does show more detail on this.
I am not sure if that pulse uses PCM, isn't that an alsa thing?

Re: Kubuntu 10.10 default with Pulse Audio
I just noticed something in Maverick, with pulseuadio installed:
While kmix shows only the master channel for output, and one channel for input, alsamixer (but NOT alsamixergui) will show all the channels. By default, it uses pulse, with one channel, but if you hit F6 and then choose your sound card, all the channels are there, and can be adjusted.
Well, so maybe I'll keep pulse, and switch from kmix to alsamixer. Best of both worlds, maybe.

Re: Kubuntu 10.10 default with Pulse Audio
As far as alsa is concerned, pulse is a pcm device. So if I open alsamixer, and choose my hardware sound card, I can control pulse with the pcm channel, and the other inputs/outputs directly. Not sure how this will all shake out, so I will have to experiment further. We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet. -- Stephen Hawking

Re: Kubuntu 10.10 default with Pulse Audio
ya even with the pulse installed I could run "alsamixer" and get all the controls.
but to see them in Kmix and use them that way I had to remove all the pulse stuff.

Re: Kubuntu 10.10 default with Pulse Audio
I am having a hard time finding/understanding the differenced between alsa and pulse, but it seems that many of the channels that are "disappearing" may be virtual or abstract channels, and not actual physical ones. Pulse may not need this hodge-podge (how many times do we see someone with no sound suddenly find it when they raise the PCM volume up when the so-called master channel was already raised?)
I think the main reasons for something like pulse are for multiple sound device made easier - ie HTPC's with HDMI audio, external soundcards, and USB headset/microphones (never realized these were actual sound devices), as well as application-level sound control - ie music player uses one volume, while something else can have a different volume.
While KDE's sound controls itself may not have all the bells and whistles yet, there are always PA's own tools.
I am NOT saying people won't have problems with sound, what I AM saying is that I bet there have been more people who have been helped by it - probably without even knowing it in many cases.
