      So I did the stuff and it failed because, as pointed out by oblivion and GreyGeek Lucid is using X.org 7.5 which is not friendly to the 9.3 ATI driver.

      So short of downgrading X.org (NO chance!!) I'm staying with my slightly flakey current set-up.

      Now I'm getting bored so I'm off for 'tea' a quaint and boring English custom of sipping stained hot water.
