Bored stiff.........

I am bored.
My main Lucid kde4.5.1 is running smoothly and stable.

My Maveric test install is so good I would never believe it was beta.

My laptop with Lucid kde4.5.1 is humming away.

Now I am bored, so bored that I have to do some work now instead of playing with my toys.

Re: Bored stiff.........

I saw 'humming away' and thought noooo that can't be true.

I'm finding 4.5.1 more or less the same as 4.5.0:

1 in 8 boot-ups fail.
Cancelling the auto-check (after 30 boots whatever) leads to a black hole.
Amorak sometimes starts, sometimes not depending upon K launcher's mood that day.
Counter for shutdown etc does not appear 99% of the time so one has to shutdown via terminal.
Kpat card games are no longer smooth as silk they are more like rough canvas.

And one or two other little issues but nothing to get excited about! So still bored(?)

leadwt, I don't believe your problem is with KDE, grub or any particular app.

You either are having HD and Video problems (incompatible? defective? aging?) which are reflecting in the operation of your desktop, or your initial install was from a bad CD burn.

What's your hardware?

Sorry, didn't see that stuff in your sig. I rarely read sigs.

Since you have an R520 chip I'll assume you are using version 9.3 of the ATI Catalyst.
I would re-examine your settings in its Control utility, and try for more conservative settings.

I'll have to admit that I am not sure about the 9.3 ATI Catalyst as I am using the 'xserver-xorg-video-ati' package and have done for quite a while after fglrx was kicked into touch by the 'Lucid' release or possibly the one before(?)

So I don't use the fglrx-amdcccle i.e Catalyst Control Centre.

Where do I look to check out the actual driver?

open up a konsole run this command
lshw
under the video card info you should see something like driver=<driver u have>

sithlord48,

Thanks for that. I think 'radeon latency' is it assuming 'display' = 'video'.

Is there really a connection between the display and the klauncher crashes?

GreyGeek,

I've run through the info on the link but as I read it it does not seem to imply that I should be running 9.3. Excuse my slow uptake but are you saying 9.3 is what I should actually have in place?

Hello leadwt,

If you have a radeon X1K series video card, unfortunately you cant use it with catalyst driver on Lucid Lynx. AFAIK, ATI dropped support for X1K series GPU, and catalyst 9.3 probably will not work on *buntu 9.04 or greater (api has changed from x.org 7.5 on) Unfortunately you have to stick with the open source xorg-radeon or xorg-radeonhd driver.

Regards

Re: Bored stiff.........

Your machine is using a legacy ATI video chip, which ATI no longer supports. But, your installed chip doesn't change either. So, as long Catalyst 9.3 gets along with the latest linux kernel, you can install ATI's proprietary 9.3 driver for your chip. If it isn't compatible with the latest Linux kernal then, like Oblivion said, you are stuck with open source drivers. If you try to install the 9.3 driver it will tell you if it is incompatible with the installed kernel. Unfortunately, going back to a previous, compatible, kernel can deprive you of a lot of new features and capabilities present in the latest kernel.

That URL I gave you is where you can download the Catalyst 9.3 Linux driver. Documentation and installation instructions can be found here.

oblivion and GreyGeek,

Thanks for the info. much appreciated.

I'll download the 9.3 and give it a whirl if it takes!

I'm fully backed up on another drive so should survive the experience.

I blame Fintan for all this . . . .
