    Keepassx

    Hi

    My daughter recently appears to have had her hotmail hacked and amongst the documents on there there was one which contained a number of her other passwords (oh the joys of webmail!). I'm looking for something to help her tighten up her security (she won't leave windows btw) and tbh for myself too, as all my passwords are on my laptop in an odt file, although this is password protected FWIW.

    I have stumbled upon keepass which looks like it might be a viable solution. It's cross-platform and available for 'buntu in the repos. Anyone with any experience of this please?

    I've noticed quite a few people have read this and not commented. First, I can't help as I've never used that program. I use a passworded spreadsheet. I did want to say that I hate hearing that has happened. To bad people don't put their talents to better use. Actually I think that is what KWallet can do. I'd look into that.

      I don't usually think about the password thing........that program looks cool though.

      but what would be wrong with a password protected rar archive...?

      a few years ago I tried to brake 1 with john the ripper (my stepson passed away in a car accident....and their were some protected rar's in his collage stuff we wanted to see ) anyway a brute force attack on a 15 character pass phrase would have taken 4 thousand years

      their still locked.

        I've been looking at keepassx too, and so far it looks good. The best thing to do, though, as with any file containing passwords, is to either keep it on removable media, or protect it with a keyfile that is kept on removable media. Both options are available with keepassx.

          Thanks for the feedback all (sorry for your loss Vinny btw, I do hope time has done some healing).

          I suspect that kwallet could do the job for me, but unfortunately because of its tie in with knetwork manager I have given it a blank password so that's probably no use.

          Currently I have my password data on a password - protected odt file. At least it has a password! The downside is the document is currently called "passwords.odt" so at the very least I should give it an innocuous name. I do like the idea of a separate database being off the hard drive (maybe on an sd card as, even if my PC got hacked it wouldn't be in the home directory. As my "passwords .odt" file is a few pages long it will take a little time to sort. I'll post back on my findings.

          My daughter is a different matter - we have no evidence to say the passwords have been seen or used. We do know that spam messages about fake Rolex watches have been sent to everyone in her address book, ostensibly from her. Why she trusted hotmail in the first place defeats me but there it is - I suspect it's simply down to us having different attitudes on security..

            I haven't used KeePassX, but I used to use KeePass (windows only, KeePassX is multi-platform port of KeePass but doesn't offer all features of KeePass 2, yet) a long time ago and I would highly recommend it.

            It is much better than using either a text file or a spreadsheet, account management is much easier and its more secure in my opinion, as for one, you can just copy password without actually making it visible (it was possible in KeePass, should also be possible in KeePassX), which can be useful, if there are people standing behind you and you can't remember your password.

                I can say that it suits me well, I use 3 versions altogether. Keepass Portable is on my USB stick so I can use it anywhere I go on windows machines. On my phone I have KeePass for J2ME although this version is readonly. Last but not least, on my pc I have Keepassx installed.

                      I've been using keepass(x) for nearly 5 years now... it's a great app, has an android port and makes my life easier. I also use it to store serial numbers/activation codes for my wife's windows apps, and a bunch of other things.

                      I print out all my passwords and then store them in a safe... but otherwise, I don't even know what any of my (important) passwords are! I just use the max number of characters and symbols and have it auto generate... that way every website has a different password and it is as uncrackable as can be.

                      My main keepass password is huge, but since it is the only one I need to remember, I don't care.
