    graphics driver

so i've been using the generic graphics driver that's come with the kde system, but it's getting to the point where i want to try and load the windows graphics driver meant for this system onto the laptop, it doesn't look like i can use wine to install it, is there another program i can use to install a windows graphics driver?

You cannot install Windows drivers on Linux, not even with Wine.
You must install the Linux driver instead. Look on the Intel page for the graphics driver for Linux.

Actually they do have drivers for linux, but most probably you are already using them, as they are already built in X server. You can check if there is a new version available and compile them yourself (I think Maverik - kubuntu 10.10 is supposed to include new intel drivers, if you can wait). Here are the links:
            http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/cs-010512.htm

And to check current driver status in X:

              Re: graphics driver

If you have the file xserver-xorg-video-intel installed from the main repos, you probably already already have the optimal driver. If you (and I) required top notch 3d performance we wouldn't be running an intel card in any event

If you want the latest (experimental!) version of the of the drivers you can add the xswat ppa. Details are here

              https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat...ive/x-updates/

FWIW the drivers in the ppa don't play too well with my humble i915 so I don't use them but YMMV. Easy enough to go back if you need to.

Wrong, x-swat has the latest stable xorg drivers.

The experimental bleeding edge xorg drivers (now xorg 1.9.0) are in the xorg crack pushers repository:

                  Re: graphics driver

tbh I didn't find them stable at all

However, I find the ppa description somewhat contradictory:

                  "PPA description

Updated versions of X.org drivers, libraries, etc. for Ubuntu.

This PPA is for stable upstream releases of X.org components. If you're looking for something even more bleeding-edge, please see the xorg-edgers PPA"

What I cannot link are the terms "stable" and "even more bleeding edge"

Personally I have always found with my card that whenever I have installed these drivers (the first time was with jaunty) something would always degrade, until they made it into the main repos.

Also don't forget that Linux developers have a bit of a different definition of "stable" than the common usage (along with many other terms).

So, common usage "stable" = "Doesn't crash more than once a week."

Linux developer "stable" = "Was tested and released and no one is working on that version at the moment."

                      Re: graphics driver

Stable also (generally) means it has been designated for release 'for general usage' - that it is no longer 'in testing.'
