Kubuntu affects Windows 7 on dual boot ?

    Hi all,

I have this strange problem, which I think has to do with Kubuntu but if I am wrong my apologies!!
I have a dual boot Kubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 x64 machine. Kubuntu always works :-)
If I have been working in Kubuntu and reboots to get into Windows 7 a long list of drivers will fail to load (as listed in eventviewer) and I have to reboot again. This time everything is fine and I can work in Windows (If I again reboot/shut down and start in Windows and it will be fine). It is only after I have been working in Kubuntu and the first time I boot into windos that the problem occurs. Anybody knows how to fix this?

    Thanks

    Just a hunch ....

Next time you plan to switch from Kubuntu to Win 7, try shutting the machine all the way off. Then (after the fans and drives have had a few seconds to spin down) push the power button, then choose Win 7 off your boot menu, and see how it starts.

BTW, I have Win 7 running perfectly on a VMware Player VM. I just run it inside Linux when I need to use it. No rebooting needed .... 8)

Re: Kubuntu affects Windows 7 on dual boot ?

Thanks for the reply, I did not mention that I have tried to shut down the computer and leave it for a while before booting into windows and it does not 'solve' the problem, however, since I tried it again, the number of drivers not loading is different from time to time (strange). I know about virtual but since the 'work' I do in windows is rather demanding graphic wise I like to have my windows as a real partition.
      Any other thoughts?

This is an odd one.. I'm tempted to say this is a Win7 rather than a kubuntu issue but before I do...

Are you using grub to decide which OS to boot into? ie did you have a win 7 installation and then let the 'buntu install do its thing?

If so, all I can think of is running update-grub in a terminal to correct any boot issues from that end.

Otherwise I don't know what tools there are for Win 7 system integrity but given the apparent random nature of the issue I recommend you run one!

Re: Kubuntu affects Windows 7 on dual boot ?

Thanks for the reply. I had a Win7 installation and let Kubuntu do its thing. I nevertheless did the update-grub and it might have helped to some degree. I still get a lot of drivers not loading after having been in Kubuntu, but I now don't have to reboot to be able to work with Win7 (before the keyboard and pad didn't work). I did do a CheckDisk (unmounted) and cfs /scannow (mounted) and both reported no problems.

Any suggestions are more than welcome

          Thanks

Re: Kubuntu affects Windows 7 on dual boot ?

Back to nothing working (two times booting each time I have to work in Windows) and had one instant of crash during windows 7 startup!
I did a boot_info_script and found that in sda3 (which is ext) that there is a 'Unknown BootLoader on sda3'

Re: Kubuntu affects Windows 7 on dual boot ?

Hi again, I guess no one else have similar problems or any suggestions.. I tried to do a clean install of windows 7, which of course destroyed grub, but I was able to use the liveCD and reinstall it again, so Kubuntu once again works fine. However windows 7 has the same problem still. After being in Kubuntu some (not the same) drivers fail to load, sometimes the nvidia driver is not working, sometimes the keyboard is not working, however after rebooting once again into Windows everything is fine. Are there no anyone that have some suggestion to what can be going on?? It seems to be that something is not correctly 'reset' after being in Kubuntu and after the frsit reboot in windows this 'thing' is then 'reset' so the second time I log into windows it works!

I'd like to hear details on your hardware, especially the motherboard and the hard drive. This is a most unusual problem -- I watch this forum and Ubuntu forums, and I've never seen anything like it.

Re: Kubuntu affects Windows 7 on dual boot ?

                  Here is the info.

It is a Dell XPS M1530 (Bios ver. A12, the lasted), with a solid state HD (samsung SSD RBX series 128GB M ATA device
                  Intel Core 2 Duo Penryn p (478)

Main board Dell inc, 0D501F, Chipset intel PM965 rev C0 Southbridge intel 82801HBM (ICH8-ME)

                  4 GB RAM DDR2

Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT, using an older driver 195.62 that is WHQL. The newer ones I have read have some bugs (256) which I way I am holding on to one that has worked for me.

I hope this is what you need, else please let me know, thanks for using your time
