    Re: weird network issues

That's good info about the bug, but if you don't have network-manager installed, as Ole Juul pointed out, it's a moot point. I have not used network-manager in years. I got tired of dealing with the problems and decided I could do a better job as my own network manager. All network-manager does is provide an interface for the files that actually control the network. So read some man pages, and get educated on those files that actually do control the network.

I think I disagree. Where in the *buntu documentation can you show me that pushing the power button on a running system is a supported/expected method to shut it down? I have never heard of any desktop Linux installed on a computer hard drive supporting that method.

You have a shutdown script from Kickoff. You have Suspend to Ram (S2RAM, aka "Sleep"). You have Suspend to Disk (S2Disk, aka "Hibernate"). You have the terminal, from which you can issue
      Code:
      sudo shutdown now -h
With all these better methods, and no recommendation from Ubuntu, why would you expect trouble-free results by pushing the power button?

And, in case you think there's a "freeze" (which there isn't), you can always resort the method that is recommended:

I guess it could happen in the event of a power failure. But remember, if you can't seem to shut down your computer any other way, you can usually raise some skinny elephants.

Also not a recommended method .....

Yes, those things happen. But don't expect the running interfaces that got slammed, and the disk writes that didn't get flushed, to all be happy again afterwards.

actually i think kubuntu was having an arguement with the vista file system, i was retrieving files from the 40 Gigs i left of the vista side (dual-boot) and when i had it analyze the files the system froze, i couldn't even move the mouse, so i waited five minutes and after no change i had to force a shutdown. otherwise i use the shutdown button in the start menu lol

Alt-SysRq r,s,e,i,u,b will usually rescue the system. Pause a few seconds after each command.

                But you said:

. . . it just says that my network manager is disabled no matter what, . . .
I'm having a little trouble putting it all together. Anyway, as long as you
                re happy.

It's not disabled. From what we all understand, it is (or should be) deleted.

Actually I do that almost as a matter of routine, as there is an option to do that in system settings/power management. Mind you, I suspect it may apply to laptops only.

On the general question, there is a debian bug that means a suspend to Ram knocks out networkmanager as well

Hmmmmm -- I think I just had a little learning experience. In System Settings>Advanced>Power Management>Edit Profiles, there's an item on the "Actions" tab called "When power button pressed" and you can set it to any one of 7 behaviors, one of which is "Shutdown". (KDE 4.4.4 on Debian). I would assume that this initiates the bash "shutdown -h" sequence, which is not the same as disconnecting power.

OK, so I was wrong on that. Apologies to davolc.
